Very affordable bilingual version
By William D. Middleton
This is a new print edition of a late 19th Century translation that is in the public domain. The original is available as a PDF file from Google. This edition has the advantage of being an actual print version that you can hold and read, and is quite inexpensive. It doesn't have the extensive footnotes of the original translation however, which is a drawback. It is just the Chinese text, and the translation to English without any commentary or explanation of the translation. Worth having for the Bilingual text, and affordable. You might want to get access to the PDF of the original, or have another version for the commentary. Part of the Dragon Reader series on the Confucian Classics.

Nagarjuna's Letter to a Friend: With Commentary by Kangyur Rinpoche, by Nagarjuna

An exposition of the entire Buddhist path in only 123 verses. A Buddhist classic.

Nagarjuna's poetic presentation of the fundamental teachings of the Great Vehicle, or Mahayana, is remarkable for its concise style and memorable imagery, making it one of the most widely quoted sources in other commentaries on the Mahayana path. The great Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (first-second century C.E.) wrote his celebrated poem "Letter to a Friend" as a gift of advice to a South Indian king, and it has since become a monument in the Indian shastra tradition.

Despite its short length (only 123 verses), Nagarjuna's "Letter to a Friend" covers the entire Mahayana path, combining a practical approach to daily conduct with a theoretical exposition of the different stages leading to enlightenment. It has thus been an ideal source for many of Tibet's great scholars seeking a scriptural authority to enhance their own descriptions of the Buddhist path. Any difficulties in understanding the poem are overcome here by Kangyur Rinpoche's commentary, which turns Nagarjuna's sometimes cryptic poem into straightforward prose, expanding on each topic and ordering the different subjects in such a way that on returning to the original poem, the reader can easily make sense of the advice it contains.

It includes headings to explain Nagarjuna's frequent changes in subject and full explanations of the ideas introduced in each verse. In addition to the commentary, this book presents the original poem in the Tibetan and in a new English translation that attempts to emulate Nagarjuna's lines of metric verse. Also included are Kangyur Rinpoche's structural outline (sa bchad), a Tibetan line index to enable students to locate quotations used in other Tibetan works, full notes, and a glossary.

From the Publisher
TRANSLATOR’S INTRODUCTION Few people who have begun studying Tibetan Buddhism can remain unaware for long of the importance of Nagarjuna’s Letter to a Friend (Suhrllekha in Sanskrit), for even if they have not had the opportunity to read it on its own, they will sooner or later come across quotations from Nagarjuna’s poem in the many written and oral commentaries on other texts that the Tibetan tradition has produced. The Letter to a Friend, despite its short length, is a monument of the Indian shastra tradition for it covers the whole Mahayana path with unusual clarity and memorable imagery. For many students of Buddhism the original canonical texts—that is, the sutras and other works that recorded the Buddha’s teachings and were translated in the Tibetan Kangyur—could prove somewhat daunting, for there is a vast number of them and they often confine themselves to specific subjects, being in most cases delivered in response to specific situations. To gain an overall perspective of the whole Buddhist! path required not only an exceptional memory but a formidable ability to order and synthesize the material expressed in the sutras. It was to enable students to better grasp the real message of the whole scope and variety of the Buddha’s teachings that, centuries after the Buddha had left this world, Indian masters like Nagarjuna composed the many shastras of the later canonical tradition that were translated in the Tibetan Tangyur. To think of the shastras simply as commentaries is not always entirely meaningful, for such works as the Letter to a Friend and Shantideva’s The Way of the Bodhisattva condense rather than expand on the Buddha’s original teachings. They are, all the same, entirely based on the Buddha’s words, and indeed many lines in the Letter to a Friend specifically refer to passages in the sutras. These references serve as keys to jog the reader’s memory, though they assume, of course, that the reader is already familiar with these same sutras. A glance at the last two lines of verse 68, and at the corresponding section in the commentary with its quotation from the sutra alluded to, provides a good illustration of this. It also shows why it has been necessary for subsequent masters, both in India and Tibet, to in their turn compose commentaries that explain and expand on these shastras. Works like the Letter to a Friend, which could be easily memorized, thus provided a framework onto which the Buddhist practitioner could "hang" the detailed expositions to be found in the sutras. And, since they covered a wide range of topics, they were useful as scriptural sources to be quoted by Tibetan writers explaining specific points of the Buddhist teachings.

Nagarjuna Nagarjuna is generally considered with Asanga to be the most important figure in Mahayana Buddhism. Acknowledged as the father of Madhyamika, it was he who brought to the human world the Prajaparamita in 100,000 verses (hitherto hidden in the realm of the nagas) which inspired his own Mulamadhyamaka-karika on which the entire Madhyamika is based. A prolific writer, his works include the Six Texts on Reasoning, hymns of praise and a number of discourses (including the Letter to a Friend). As principal abbot of Nalanda he was largely responsible for increasing this great monastic university’s reputation as a seat of learning and pure conduct. Most of the details of his life, however, have come down to us largely in the form of legend, and as with many great masters of the first few hundred years after the Buddha’s parinirvana, it is difficult to form a clear picture from all the numerous and varied accounts available. The Buddha himself predicted that Nagarjuna would be born ! 400 years after his own parinirvana, and that he would live 600 years. This in fact correlates with the dates most scholars attribute for him, which lie somewhere around the 1st and 2nd centuries of the Christian era, falling roughly in the middle of the period foretold by the Buddha. Despite this prediction of longevity, it seemed at first that Nagarjuna’s life would be a short one. A soothsayer consulted soon after his birth told his parents that the baby would only survive seven days unless they were to make offerings to one hundred monks, which condition they were only too happy to fulfil. But having been told subsequently that nothing could be done to extend the boy’s life longer than seven years, they sent him away shortly before his seventh birthday so that they would not have to endure the sorrow of seeing their son’s corpse. It was as a result of his arrival at Nalanda, where he was ordained and initiated into a tantric practice conferring immortality by the great master Saraha (also known in this context as Rahulabhadra), that he not only survived this second deadline but went on to become a learned scholar and fully accomplished practitioner, mastering the teachings of the sutras and tantras, and even the science of alchemy. Throughout his life! he significantly benefited the doctrine and sentient beings, on many occasions using miraculous powers. The special relationship he cultivated with the nagas, and which enabled him to retrieve the 100,000 verse Prajnaparamita, is reflected not only in his name but in numerous representations of him depicting the nagas’ cobra-like heads shading him from the sun as he taught the Dharma.

King Surabhibhadra While contemporary Sanskrit sources have provided modern scholars with some idea of Nagarjuna’s life, it is impossible to identify the friend for whom he wrote his Letter because no Sanskrit version of this work has survived. His original name can only be surmised by translating back into Sanskrit the two Tibetan names that exist in different versions of the text. As a result, we find him variously referred to in different translations of the Letter as Surabhibhadra (the name we have adopted here, albeit arbitrarily), Udayibhadra, Udayana, Gautamiputra, Kaniska, Satavahana and so on. All we can say is that he was probably one of a number of Andhran kings ruling in Central India at the time Nagarjuna lived there. Nonetheless, even if a knowledge of the historical background to a work of literature can sometimes give valuable insights into the text itself, in this case precise identification of the king is not crucial to understanding Nagarjuna’s message and does not affect its value as a basis for Buddhist practice.

From the Author
""The Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (1st-2nd century) remains best known for his essential expositions of the Madhyamika philosophy. In Nagarjuna's Letter to a Friend (Snow Lion, 2005), the Padmakara Translation Group presents another facet of the great master's works. Addressed to a king, this epistolary poem offers advice and instructions for applying the Buddhist teachings to life in the world. Although less abstract than Nagarjuna's philosophical compositions, the Letter to a Friend shows the same sophistication and descriptive skill that mark his better-known masterpieces. The concise and lucid commentary by Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche (1897-1975) reveals that the letter's 123 verses provide an overview of the entire bodhisattva path, organized into sections devoted to each of the six perfections. "--Buddhadharma, Books in Brief

A classic of Indian Buddhist literature
By Midwest Book Review
Skillfully translated into English by Padmakara Translation Group, Nagarjuna's Letter To A Friend is an outline of the fundamental principles of Mahayana Buddhism as penned in the form of a poem by the Indian Buddhist master Nagarjuna (1st-2nd century A.D.) to a South Indian King. Now a classic of Indian Buddhist literature, Nagarjuna's Letter To A Friend has only 123 verses yet covers the whole of the Mahayana path, in which followers strive for Buddhahood for the sake of all beings, and offers a practical approach to daily conduct alongside a theological discussion of the different stages leading to enlightenment. Kangyur Rinpoche offers a commentary that sheds light on the more technical or mystifying aspects of Nagarjuna's poem, offering full explanations of difficult concepts. A structural outline and Tibetan line index allow reader to quickly locate quotes used in other Tibetan works; notes and a glossary round out this "must-read" text for serious-minded students and practitioners of Mahayana Buddhism.

Excellent
By Marpo Ri
This is a very nice translation of the traditional text. However, equally important is the exceptional comments by Kyabje Kangyur Rinpoche & the supplemental information, including an index, glossary, notes and a structure of the teachings in this text. This book well surpassed my expectations of a good translation of an important text.

Profound mind!!
By Mauricie
Nagarjuna means to me the greatest and more profound thinker that ever walked this earth. His analysis of reality, his observations, his logic and dialectic has convinced me of his incredible talent and insights.
As an advice, his writings are mainly in stanzas and most be read very slow and every word has its hidden meaning!
This is a deep philosopher with an astonishing view of reality, with a very different approach to those we are familiar with!
I recommend ALL his texts and writing. I have read most of them and revise them once in a while.
Unfortunately, I'm not an scholar on this field. Nagarjuna makes me dream with Nalanda University and all the explosion of ideas that existed there 2000 years ago, same ideas and doubts we question and try to understand today!

So Many Roads: The Life and Times of the Grateful Dead, by David Browne

Fifty years after they first came together and changed the sound of rock 'n' roll, the Grateful Dead remain one of rock's most beloved bands—a musical and cultural phenomenon that spans generations and paved the way for everything from the world of jam bands and the idea of independently released music to social networking. Much has been written about the band, but nothing quite as vibrant and vivid as So Many Roads.

Drawing on new interviews with surviving members and people in their inner circle—along with the group's extensive archives and his own research from years of covering the group—David Browne, longtime music journalist and contributing editor at Rolling Stone, does more than merely delve into the Dead's saga. By way of an altogether unique structure—each chapter centered around a significant or pivotal day in their story—he lends this epic musical and cultural story a you-are-there feel unlike any other book written about the band.

So Many Roads takes us deep into the world of the Dead in ways that will be eye-opening even to the most rabid Deadheads. Readers will find themselves inside their communal home in Haight-Ashbury during the band's notorious 1967 bust; behind the scenes in the studio, watching the Dead at work (and play); backstage at the taping of the legendary "Touch of Grey" video and at their final shows; and in the midst of the Dead's legendary band meetings. Along the way, readers will hear not only from the Dead but also from friends, colleagues, lovers, and crew members, including some who've never spoken to the press before.

The result is a remarkably detailed and cinematic book that paints a strikingly fresh portrait of one of rock's greatest and most enduring institutions and sheds new light—for fans and newcomers alike—on the band's music, dynamics, and internal struggles. "There is nothing like a Grateful Dead concert," read the legendary bumper stickers. Similarly, there's nothing like So Many Roads, which explores all-new routes on the band's long, strange trip.

Review
Billboard, 5/30/15
“An all-encompassing narrative portrait of the iconic mid-20th century band The Grateful Dead…Much has been written about the band, but nothing quite as vibrant and vivid as So Many Roads.”

Library Journal, 05/1/15
“Browne is to be commended for telling the Dead’s story completely and not just focusing on the band’s glory years of 1969–74 (or 1977, depending on whom you ask)... It’s hard to imagine a better book for a Dead neophyte to start with.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, 04/24/15
“Whether you're a tie-dyed Deadhead, late-arriving "Touch"-head or merely curious, Browne's So Many Roads offers an engaging account of an idiosyncratic American musical institution.”

"David Browne has come up with a completely unique way of telling the Grateful Dead’s story, deftly moving back and forth through time from various chronological pivot points, weaving the intricate tale the way the Dead would open up, explore, and close a great ’72 ‘Playing in the Band.’ It’s filled with little (and a few big) things I didn’t know, and his evocative prose really brings out the band members’ personalities in a way that few books have.”—Blair Jackson, author of Garcia: An American Life

"So Many Roads is everything Deadheads could want and more. In a deeply reported portrait of the band in good times and bad, David Browne answers all of our questions and poses a few of his own. As Deadheads celebrate the band's fifty years, this book will prove a companion that makes that long trip a little less strange but no less fascinating.”—Eric Alterman, author of It Ain't No Sin to Be Glad You’re Alive: The Promise of Bruce Springsteen and What Liberal Media?: The Truth about Bias and the News

"Browne presents the ultimate road map of the life and times of a band that has always been a unique American cultural phenomenon."
—Robert Greenfield, author of Dark Star: An Oral Biography of Jerry Garcia and Bill Graham Presents: My Life Inside Rock and Out

"I’m a well-read Deadhead, and I learned new things even about shows I was at. (Englishtown, New Jersey, 9/3/77!) Browne braids tales of America's greatest rock band like melody lines in a primo jam, tangents looping back to the narrative, always pulling it forward. It's a wild, beautiful ride."—Will Hermes, author of Love Goes to Buildings on Fire: Five Years in New York That Changed Music Forever

"The Grateful Dead have entered the realm of myth. The triumph of So Many Roads is animating both the music and the musicians into something very real indeed."—Alan Paul, author of One Way Out: The Inside History of the Allman Brothers Band

"The Grateful Dead are as classically American as Count Basie and Frank Sinatra, and David Browne has written the ultimate book about them: interviewing everyone and bringing us into their lives in the changing decades through which this quintessentially '60s band miraculously increased its mythos, stardom, and relevance. Legendary music gives our world back to us, and specific people, coming together as bands, give us the music that gives us that world. With his wise assessments, ace reporting, and close and long lenses, Browne gives us that world and those men.”—Shelia Weller, author of Girls Like Us: Carole King, Joni Mitchell, Carly Simon—and the Journey of a Generation

Kirkus Reviews, April 2015
“Righteous testimonial to the anarchic goodness that was the Grateful Dead...[Browne is] right about most everything. He also appropriately places emphasis on things other biographers have overlooked…One of the better books on the band and welcome reading in this 50th anniversary year.”

Billboard, 3/7/15
“Expect a flood of books for the Dead’s 50th anniversary, but this one stands out thanks to new interviews and access to the band’s extensive archives.”

Hartford Courant, 3/20/15
“An engaging read.”

WBUR.org , 5/5/15
“The new book weaves an engrossing tale that takes readers onto stages and into recording studios, the group’s communal home in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district, band meetings, stints in rehab…and always, into the music…In addition to a fan’s dedication and a critic’s discerning ear, there are two things that make So Many Roads special…unimpeded access…[and] the book’s architecture allows the author to piece his story together in a most effective way…It’s this kind of detail that makes So Many Roads such a compelling read…He also writes with confidence about the intricacies of composing and recording songs…There’s also lots of joy in these pages, and more often than not the music is the fountain from which it springs. So Many Roads couldn’t get you closer to the Grateful Dead if it came with a free tab of blotter.”

The Washington Post, 5/17/15
“Like a live bootleg, each chapter digs deep into the band’s state of mind during one particular moment, and Browne enriches that moment with broader context and significance…It’s a wild trajectory, perhaps unrivaled by that of any of their contemporaries.”

Father’s Day pick, Parade Magazine, 6/21/15

Parade.com, 5/10/15
“A page turner… feel like a beautiful and intriguing documentary… gives fans who could only dream of being backstage an intimate novel-like story of how things played out on stage and behind-the-scenes before. Browne’s interviews with insiders and surviving members enabled him to create a three-dimensional portrait of the complex band.”

San Francisco Book Review, 5/15/15
“[A] fascinating telling of the history of The Grateful Dead…This book is a great way to understand them.”

TheDailyCaller, 5/9/15
“There have been many books chronicling the Dead’s five decade career, but David Browne’s…might be the most ambitious effort yet.”

People Magazine, 5/25/15
“An exhaustive, entertaining history of the Grateful Dead’s long strange trip. Timed to the iconic band’s 50th anniversary—and just in time for Father’s Day.”

Record Collector, June 2015
“David Browne does a grand job….to create a tale that almost functions as a novel.”

Magnet, May 2015
“An all-encompassing narrative portrait of the iconic mid-20th century band The Grateful Dead…Much has been written about the band, but nothing quite as vibrant and vivid as So Many Roads.”

Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, “100 Books for Summer Reading,” 5/31/15

New York Journal of Books, 5/31/15
“A genuine fan of the band, Browne creates a mix of the familiar and the new that will appeal across the boards.”

Houston Press, 5/20/15
“Excellent…[A] highly skillful, well-written, and comprehensive book…Perhaps better than any other Dead book, Browne’s offers a clear and deep picture of the members’ interpersonal relationships and stature (both real and perceived) within the group…Of the spate of Dead-related biographies, memories and musical appreciations that have appeared in bookstores recently, the informative and evocative So Many Roads is the best. And it now stands alongside the McNally book as the two must-reads for fans.”

Bureau of Arts and Culture Magazine, June 2015
“David Browne has written a grand opus of a book on, of all things, the greatest rock & roll accident that has ever occurred: The Grateful Dead…Mr. Browne has fashioned an exhaustively researched book into an easily readable tome of sorts. The writer for Rolling Stone magazine has taken an original and interesting approach and given us a portrait of the band through a very straight forward concept that fits well with his style, his experience and his day job, writing about music in digestible amounts…Its a complex story, told with an exacting style….by the fifth page of The Prologue, the reader is hooked. I personally cannot think of a more easy reading style, chocked with so many actual facts, insights and observations in a very long, long time. …a nice read that newcomers as well as hardcore fans will surely dig…Worth every dollar spent on the 482 pages it offers readers.”

San Francisco Chronicle, 6/16/15
"Refreshingly, the ups and downs of the ’80s and ’90s get as much attention as the glory days of the ’60s."

Dallas Morning News, 6/28/15
“Browne, an editor at Rolling Stone, proves particularly adept at cutting through the Dead bread and circuses to engage the sound.”

PopMatters, 6/30/15
"Far and away the best of the volumes published this year on the matter. ... One of the more skilled biographers of our time ... Browne has a fiction writer’s knack for continuous revelation such that the pacing and details allow us to see the significance of related events for the first time—there’s a humanness to the reporting that immerses us deep into the land of Garcia and Co. and keeps us clamped to the edge our seats ... His words seem to fully capture the tone and timbre of each decade chronicled here, so much so that we almost feel as though we are living through those times once again."

Best Classic Bands, 6/1/15
"Browne gets at the truth – or as close to the truth as you can get given that most of the participants were high on one substance or another – through broad and scrupulous research ... If you want to find out how they got there, or just celebrate the band’s 50th anniversary, So Many Roads is a smart and satisfying read."

Ventura County Reporter, 7/23/15
“A comprehensive and definitive chronicle of one of the greatest bands of American musicians whose influence continues unabated and undimmed, So Many Roads is like a family album filled with those whose spirits are undying.”

Relix.com, 8/15
“[An] excellent and rich new Dead biography.”

Examiner.com, 11/17/15
“Takes readers into the never-visited worlds of the Grateful Dead: Backstage babble in groupie-laden dressing rooms; recording studios; legendary band meetings; the group’s communal home in San Francisco’s Haight-Ashbury district during the band's notorious 1967 bust; even stints in rehab…Much has been written about the band, but nothing quite as vibrant and vivid as So Many Roads. Readers will hear not only from the Dead but also from sundry crew members, friends, colleagues and lovers, including some who've never spoken to the press before. The result is a remarkably detailed and cinematic book that paints a strikingly fresh portrait of Garcia and Company and sheds new light—for fans and newcomers alike—on the band's music, dynamics, and internal struggles.”

Rolling Stone, “Holiday Gift Guide 2015”
“Fifty years after the dawn of the Dead, is there anything left to learn about the band? Actually, yes – fresh interviews with surviving members and a unique approach.”

Huffington Post, 12/16/15
“If you want to give a book to a Deadhead (including yourself) the 50th anniversary has yielded a veritable cornucopia. The best narrative I've come across is that by my friend, David Browne.”

Donovan’s Bookshelf, August 2016
“A powerful, lively saga that will be indispensible to any Grateful Dead follower or rock music history collection.”

Deeply Reported and Well Told
By Peter Richardson
The first thing to note about So Many Roads is how deeply reported it is. After contacting David Lemieux about this project, David Browne had access to the Dead's remaining members and inner circle. He didn't squander the opportunity. In this book, he brings forward a great deal of new material based on those interviews, and he contextualizes it in new and interesting ways. (For example, his interviews with Barbara Meier show how the Cuban missile crisis provided the backdrop for Jerry Garcia's "live for the moment" lifestyle.) Even aficionados will find plenty of new insights into the band and its experience.

Browne also chose a unique way to structure his book. Instead of offering a continuous narrative, which has been done many times before, he selected seventeen days that were either turning points for the band or somehow illustrated its development. He then back-filled important information to ensure the coverage was adequate. So, for example, his seventeen days don't include the one Jerry Garcia died, but he makes sure readers know about that event and its key details. That structure allows him to bring certain moments into sharp focus without sacrificing a broader view of the band's history.

The coverage is fairly evenly distributed over the band's three decades, but most of what I learned about the Dead from this book was set in the 1980s and 1990s. Browne doesn't shrink from the challenge of Garcia's health problems, including the details of his addiction, during this period, but he never lets that topic hijack the narrative. His musical acumen (he writes for Rolling Stone) also informs the book throughout.

I relished this book and recommend it highly.

As American as (Mock) Apple Pie-and Even Tastier Than Real Thing!!
By Crescenzo C. Capece
From "Anthem of the Sun" onwards, I've been content to consider myself a Deadheart (meaning, I'd see them whenever the opportunity presented, and though I didn't trail them, their music and even elements of their existence planted themselves firmly within my passionate musical ticker). How many bands were this unique, handily incorporating so many musical styles, and brave enough to allow even their worst moments to circulate freely amongst their congregation? They've often been misunderstood, and even unfairly insulted; a well known conspirator of one of the boss-iest scripted images of a famed musician ever had the incredible audacity to label them "nostalgia mongers". You cannot be nostalgia, when you simply are being who you are, and virtually from the moment of their inception, and often to their detriment, the members of this band were true to themselves and their music. It's as simple as that!
David Browne's supremely well written and presented history of the band is the one I'd been hoping for. Rather than offer up a straight chronology, or bathe in the many myths surrounding the band, he humanizes the members, and gives us a true picture of who they are and what it was and is like to be them. It's not always pretty, but it's real, and the "carousel" style via which he darts back and forth events relating to specific and meaningful days in their history makes it a great read, and in fact, makes you wish it were even longer than the fun 400+ pages it is.
I consider myself lucky to have had the opportunity to immerse myself in an advance copy of this work. Even without the many great photos that I've seen that will appear in the commercial volume, it's a book I'll treasure as much as the music of the band. "So Many Roads" took this enthusiastic reader on a wonderful and informative trip with one of the most truly original and innovative bands ever!!

INSIGHTS INTO THE BAND FROM A SLIGHTLY DIFFERENT ANGLE. "CAN YOU PASS THE ACID TEST?" PRANKSTER FLIER.
By Stuart Jefferson
"When the music played, everything made sense. When the music stopped, things started getting weird." Mickey Hart.

"For all the field-of-flowers beauty of their music, the world of the Dead was unsentimental and demanding; to survive, one had to adapt and hold on tight." Public image versus reality of being in the band.

"How did they get together and relate to each other? They really worked on it. They wanted it badly. They were glued to the enterprise." Carolyn "Mountain Girl" Adams.

"The women did the cooking and the cleaning. All we had to do was get high and play music. It was like paradise." Phil Lesh, 1967.

"When one of the women who crashed at their home woke up in the middle of the night and saw Pigpen in her doorway, she needn't have worried; he came over and put an extra blanket on her." Public image versus private life of the band members.

"We''ll be with you just as soon as Pig finishes polishing his organ." Bob Weir.

As Deadheads know, this is the 50th anniversary of The Dead. So we can expect to see a number of books coming our way in the coming weeks/months. But an early contender for one of the better books is this good read from David Browne (author of the book "Fire And Rain" among others) who has written about music (and The Dead) for many years. It's great that Amazon is selling this book before the "official" release date, so fans won't have to wait any longer.

Yes, I know, what else is there to say about The Dead? Well, not a whole lot if the band is approached from the same angle as previous authors. But Browne has looked at the effects on the band/individual band members from various important points and/or a particular event/time in the band's life during the life of the band. Each chapter is connected to something that gives way to some insight into the band and their music. Plus, he's wisely connected things chronologically, beginning in the early '60s and up through the '80s, towards the end times for the band, and the necessity of coming to grips with life after Garcia's death. Some information will not be new to long time readers about The Dead (like me), but Browne has a way of weaving things we already know with his own angle that puts a fresh, interesting shine on the band and the era. After so many books about The Dead, it's the smaller details that make this book the most interesting--whether it's inside the band's house in Haight-Ashbury, on stage, the legendary "Wall of Sound", the Europe '72 tour, in the studio, the "Touch Of Grey" video, personal band interplay, or whatever--this book gets readers close to the band thanks to Browne. He pulls no punches when writing about the band or individual members--no matter if it's good/not so good/not so bad/bad.

"I stink, therefore I am." Band In-joke, 1984, about Garcia's personal hygiene and concern for his general well-being.

"Everybody's walking around stoned, and the chicks are naked. Topless women. Horses. It was unbelievable." DJ Mike Belardo, KMPX , S.F., on his visit to Mickey Hart's ranch, 1970.

"I'd bend my arm and hear my shirt." Rock Scully after ingesting a small amount of mescaline sulfate, 1965.

"The band happily stumbled their way down to the stage..the Dead just stood there, gazing up at a screen and giggling in a nitrous haze. To make his guitar sound like it too was laughing, Garcia began stroking the strings." Effects of pre-concert sharing of nitrous oxide courtesy of the Hell's Angels, 1970.

"You're just phoning it in." Bruce Hornsby to Jerry Garcia. "You don't understand twenty-five years of burnout, man." Garcia to Hornsby, 1991, after a lackluster live set.

Browne has interviewed a pretty fair cross section of folks who were there at the time in some capacity--friends, family, employees, hangers-on, and so on, and new interviews with surviving band members. Plus he's drawn on his own cache of information and the band's (deep) archives (helped by Dead archivist David Lemieux), put together from over the years, along with already existing information to weave his own slant on the band and their music, with no strings attached by anyone connected with the band, to the final version. The lay out of the book, plus Browne's easy to read style of writing and his putting everything into some kind of order, makes for not only an interesting and informative read, but (especially if you're a Deadhead) a book that's also fun to read. Plus, Browne has wisely included an Index, which a book of this type needs if you want to find something in a hurry. And Browne has added a Bibliography of selected reading for more information if needed. There's a b&w photograph at the head of each chapter that relates to that particular period, some which will be familiar to fans.

If you have a love for The Dead--no matter if you're relatively new and missed a lot of their whole scene, or you've been around even before the first use of the term "Deadhead" (like I was lucky enough to be)--this is a worthwhile addition to your (no doubt already cramped) Dead bookshelf.

"Lesh would often imagine the dust from Owsley's hand-pressed Blue Cheer acid drifting down through the ceiling and infusing the music they were making in the living room."

"The Acid Test was the prototype for our whole basic trip." Jerry Garcia.

"We're gonna be archetypes." Jerry Garcia to Jorma Kaukonen before the Dead had made their first record yet.

review from a manga non-specialist
By R. Mutt
This is not a "how to draw" book, but rather a "how to think creatively" book. If you wanted to draw the characters shown in this book, you'd need a lot of experience to do so. However, any manga artist from beginner level through advanced would benefit from the matrix technique described here, not to mention the benefits of having such a massive collection of diverse characters in a single volume. The matrix technique, in a nutshell, is a way to combine different aspects, both physical and mental, to create unique characters. For example, one character (a "wind spirit") was created using a witch, a circus leader, a balloon and the sky as components. Weird? Certainly. However, at first glance it's not obvious that these are the pieces that comprise it, but after reading the character description it becomes readily apparent, as is the logic for selecting these elements. To boil it down, this book is about taking a diverse system of aspects and using them to create characters that are greater than the sum of their parts. In essence, this book is an immunization against artist's block or creative burnout.

A Great Book, Albeit Abit Difficult to Understand
By Richard
This is a very good book filled with good information on how this artist logically compiles characters, but it's not easy to understand at times and the artist can be very vague and inconsistent on many details making this book a very tough read to process.

Pros:

This book presents a logical step-by-step process one could use to create unique characters. Gives a detailed working flow on how to CREATE, not just conceptualize, a character visually from head to toe. Example say your creating a half-robot character this book has a tree for the whole body and you can go into detail on what was robot and what was human from say something general like the torso right down to the fingernails. Much different from other general books like the "How to Draw Manga" series and others that just give a broad idea of how to start or just one or two examples of a specific character already made. Another good thing this book has going for it is how he has many different branches of creatures such as angels, devils, and dragons categorized with lots of suggestions so you can build or get inspiration if your stumped.

Cons:

The Artist is very vague on many details and his explanations leave something to desire. This is the way HE does his character design so likewise much of his workflow sounds like it comes from a long history of trial and error mixed with experience and he is having to explain something he most likely put together from different sources and compile them the best he can. As well he can be inconsistent on some details telling you to do one thing on one group of creatures but telling you to do something different later on, will be explaining one thing but leave you asking "But what happens next?" or "Wait, what do I do now?", or just graze on something interesting or important sounding then move on. Another complaint is how thin the creature index can be, some creature groups get more face time then others or just don't get enough explanations as if he assumes you already know how to do it or you already have a good working knowledge of the subject.

In the end this is a good book but it is in no way for beginners this is an ADVANCED book. It is possible to deceifer this book but it takes ALOT of brainpower to understand what he's talking about and fill in the blanks that he seems to assume you already know. The matrix he presents is a good system but it's hard to understand at first glance. But if you can overcome all these obstacles you can have yourself an extremely useful reference and guide to character design. The body part tree alone is a good reason to buy this book.

The main purpose of this book is to systematically pre-design your characters and do it in a way that is logical, formulaic and archetypically sound.
I almost wrote that I didn't think it was 'for beginners', but thought the better of it when I remembered those that inspired me in my youth and younger days... They were not giving me 'step by step' instruction, instead they inspired me by their work instilling in me the desire to do my own work, and to imagine.
What Tsukamoto-san has done here is just that, with the added benefit of laying out a methodology of creation. I can see this of greatest benefit to those starting out who have various characters laid out in the scheme, but who lack the skills to 'invent' the soul of that character. This book is to explain and punctuate that skill.
When first I paged through after opening my mailer envelope from Amazon... my initial impression was the flash of inspiration I got when I first (in the early 1970's) saw the work of Brian Froude... or when I was perusing the works of Roger Dean or Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo... or reading over and over again the works of jean Giraude's (Who created work under the name Moebius) "The Air Tight Garage" in Metal Hurlant.
Not to mention Fred Schrier or Dave Sheridan's spectacular works of wonder. It is that that makes me say to who ever takes the time to read this review, please do yourself a favor, get this book. Keep it by your desktop, close at hand and read it in the still of the evening when you want to dream, or in the heat of creation when you need to find that one thing to fill the gap. It is that good! Even though the mythologies are primarily 'foreign' (being from the ancient Shinto and archaic Japanese cultures, though not completely!) to the western mind, maybe it will inspire 'aspiring artists' to plunge into studies of ancient cultures of their own ancestry! It is a wonderfully presented book.
And to those who have been out there for a bit I would say, "YES! It is worth the price!"
I give it 'two thumbs up"!

Review
This book has the potential to do for our generation what John Bunyan's 'Pilgrim's Progress' did for his. It's that good! Eugene Peterson, author --Eugene Peterson, Professor Emeritus of Spiritual Theology, Regent College, Vancouver, B.C.

The Shack is the most absorbing work of fiction I've read in many years. My wife and I laughed, cried and repented of our own lack of faith along the way. The Shack will leave you craving for the presence of God. Michael W. Smith, Recording Artist --Michael W Smith, Recording Artist - personal endorsement

Reading The Shack during a very difficult transition in my life, this story has blown the door wide open to my soul. Wynonna Judd, Recording Artist --Wynonna Judd, Recording Artist - personal endorsement

About the Author
WM. PAUL YOUNG was born a Canadian and raised among a Stone Age tribe by his missionary parents in the highlands of former New Guinea. He suffered great loss as a child and young adult and now enjoys the "wastefulness of grace" with his family in the Pacific Northwest. He is also the author of Cross Roads and Eve.

From AudioFile
Mac is a grief-stricken father in mid-life about to have an extraordinary experience with God. His great sadness began four years ago on a weekend camping trip, when his 6-year-old daughter, Missy, was murdered. What he couldn't know then, but is about to learn, was God's purpose for Missy's death. Roger Mueller's clear, gentle voice characterizes Mac's family with high-spirited joy and laughter. His portrayal of Missy's animated excitement makes her especially believable. His polished performance of grief-stricken Mac brings tears. With empathy and sensitivity, Mueller captures the mysterious voices of those who have invited him to the now abandoned, yet transformed, cabin in the wilderness. This compelling fantasy explores themes of love, loss, and blame. G.D.W. AudioFile 2008, Portland, Maine-- Copyright AudioFile, Portland, Maine

On time!

My daughter is slowly killing herself after losing her first born soon to a horrific accident. Being that he was also or first grandchild we were all devastated. I choose to believe God is good and He will guide me and my daughter and my entire family to Him and heal us...finally. This book is the beginning of that healing. I will share it with all of them. Thank you!

Meeting God: An Unexpected Journey
By Michael Sholders
Driven by fierce anger after losing his daughter to a perverted killer, the protagonist takes an unexpected journey into a place that expands his mindset on God. As he takes this journey, I found myself traveling with him, and allowing my mind to be expanded on my concept of God as well. Even though this book could never be called a studious piece of theology, it has a powerful message, and that message for me was this 'Your concept of the Almighty God is too small, too confined, and steeped in too much religiosity" God is God, and He can be anything He wishes to be, and He can present Himself in whatever fashion He chooses. He is immutable, inscrutable, and omniscient. Who are we to question His authority, ability, and appearance? So when God shows Himself in The Shack to be large black woman (similar at least in my imagination to Aunt Jemimah), it is at first shocking, then amusing, but ultimately, mind expanding. If this book doesn't allow a person's concept of God to grow, I am not sure what will. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and I totally understand how it can be controversial in nature since it allows God to take on an infinitely different image than what the normative thought allows. Some would say that it trivializes God, and while I understand that sentiment, since He is, after all, the same God who would not allow Moses to even look upon His face. He is also the God who did not allow his name to even be pronounced by His people since He is so holy and righteous. In spite of those valid concerns, the concepts espoused in The Shack actually expanded God, without trivializing Him at all. In fact, for me, it actually made Him larger and even more powerful, as well as infinitely more personal than my earlier vision of His majesty. The book portrays Jesus and the Holy Spirit as entirely different characters than portrayed in normally accepted theological boundaries, but again the concepts are fresh, and expanding. I believe that any image that any of us have of the Almighty God is by definition too small regardless of how big it is, so anything that allows us to think fresh thoughts is ultimately valuable. A good, fresh read, highly recommended.

Very profound and thought provoking.
By Amazon Customer blubird
Very profound and thought provoking. I will never look at relationships the same way - God truly does work in mysterious ways. This book opens up the mind and soul to new possibilities and choices for life in loving relationships as we were created to be. Breaks down the barriers that hold us back ... cuts through all the crap and gets to the heart of the matter.

Another Enjoyable Collection
By Diana
I read Rossis's Power of Six, his other short story collection, and got a kick out of the unique tales. Infinite Waters didn't disappoint, offering a wide variety of speculative fiction stories, all well-paced with engaging characters and unique twists. I read them over two nights and liked these tales as much as the first collection. The stories range from grotesque to sweet with a few thought-provoking dynamics tossed in. The story Two's a Crowd is a particularly memorable look at the dynamics of human perception. I received an advanced readers copy of this book and was not asked by the author for a review.

A Master Class in Short Fiction
By Nat Russo
I've said it before, and I'll say it again. Nicholas Rossis is a master of the craft. Each of these short stories is handcrafted with the utmost attention to every facet of good story telling. But more, Nicholas finds a way to wrap the collection in a "meta" story. It was a brilliant way of grouping together a set of seemingly unrelated short stories. I read each of these over the course of a couple of days, and I found myself looking forward to coming home so I could dig into the next story.

In short fiction, you don't have a lot of room for error. Every sentence, every word should have to fight for its existence, and Nicholas handles this expertly. Each story pulls you in to its unique little universe and takes you on a ride where the tracks are hidden, and you can't see the corners up ahead.

If you want to experience what good short fiction is like, grab a copy of Infinite Waters.

A Special Treat
By Sue Coletta
I bought this author's children's story, Runaway Smile--which I adore--and when he completed Infinite Waters he sent me a copy. Speculative Fiction is not my usual genre, but I still really enjoyed these short stories. The writing is clean, the stories fun and entertaining. My favorite story is Infinite Waters. It's about a fortuneteller who has an aspiring author as a client. No spoilers, but I will say this story runs through the book so don't think, as I initially did, that it ends after the initial storyline. It's a cool technique; slipping in pieces of the plotline in between the other stories. Infinite Waters also had a cool ending that I didn't see coming. Overall, this a great read...speculative fiction fan or no.
