Great intro to PHP

I found this easy to follow, and it covers the key concepts without getting bogged down in unnecessary stuff.
I've had a few goes at getting to grips with PHP but never got very far. This has given me a good start with the simple exercises to follow. Plus it gives good ideas for building on the exercises and extend my knowledge.
And the examples and exercises are user-friendly and amusing in places!

The book turned this PHP beginner into a fast learner.

This is the leanest, most efficient introduction to PHP that you're likely to find. Docherty doesn't waste a word. The title promises to teach you the fundamentals in only 24 hours. It did the job for me in 4 hours, but then I have some programming experience in other languages. If you're an utter noobie, you'll likely need more time than me, but probably not that much more. Studying the book between football games on a weekend should do it.
I said the book is lean, but it is the opposite of mean. Docherty is the rare writer who is both an expert developer and a sympathetic teacher. Everything is laid out in the simplest possible language. Everything connects with everything else. There are a ton of practical examples that clarify concepts.
You begin coding PHP within minutes of opening the book. By the time you finish, you've created working programs that are actually useful, among them an email processor, a program that generates passwords, and routines that process HTML forms. In addition to appearing throughout the book, the code examples are available for download at the author's website if you've purchased the book.
As I worked my way through the lessons, I never got into my familiar WTF mode. There are concepts that seem as if they might be a little gnarly without an instructor who knows his stuff. These would include installing software, working with associative arrays, debugging, and working with MySql. But surprise—they were a breeze.
Most of all, I appreciate the book for its ability to instill confidence in me. I think it's natural to approach any new programming language with some trepidation. But good teaching can mitigate the fear. And in the end, nothing builds confidence like knowing that you've learned what you set out to learn.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who's ready to learn PHP and prefers to make the learning process as easy as possible.
