Readers acquainted with the critical writings on Wordsworth will no doubt find much in this volume that is old and familiar, especially in Chapters I and II. It is hoped, however, that the treatment of this old and well-known material is sufficiently novel and original to warrant its appearance in print. Such novelty and originality are claimed for the bit of psychology brought out near the close of Chapter II, for the intermediary stages of mysticism as developed in Chapter V, for the renunciation of the mystical proper and yet the retention of the highest mystical intensity possible for artistic excellence as shown in Chapter VII, and for the attempt in Chapter VIII to answer the question how far and in what sense Wordsworth is a philosopher.
Perhaps more obvious than novelty and originality is the indebtedness these pages show to various men and various writings.

Soothing our souls in tranquil Joy

Wordsworth is to my mind the most calming and soothing of the great Poets. When he opens 'Earth has not anything to show more fair' in one of his greatest poems and comes to 'Never did sun more beautifully steep in its first splendor, valley, rock or hill' we feel a peace and a calm of cosmic proportion. Wordsworth in the work many schoolchildren first meet him through speaks at the end of the poem of those images ' which flash upon the inner eye which is the Bliss of Solitude, And then my heart with Pleasure fills, and dances with the Daffodills.' We feel in his work an incredible ability to arise in joy at perception of Nature and at its recollected contemplation. The great bounding youthful perception is in Wordsworth ordinarily tempered by a more mature appreciation 'recollected in tranquillity'.
Wordsworth's greatness is in the short poems, and in the great Odes, 'The Intimations of Immortality ' and 'Tintern Abbey'.
And it is a greatness which enhances the life, the spirit the happiness of its true readers.

this is a good book but, it is not what i really wanted. overall it's worth buying. i did learn some facts about wordsworth. it has more biography than poetry.great seller
