Lay Siege to Heaven, An Appreciation

I first read this book in 1963 - as it was being serialised in Extension Magazine. I was drawn to Catherine Benincasa, the stubborn, forthright, reclusive young woman who refused to allow herself to be used for any reason by her mother or her city - or even the Church. Catherine was a woman of rare courage and spirit. She was spiritual - but that did not stop her from denouncing cardinals & bishops as "whoremongers" when she found them chasing after wealth and political advantage. Mr DeWohl's wonderful introduction to Catherine is a bit superficial, but if this is understood at the beginning the reader will not be disappointed. It must also be remembered that DeWohl wrote during a less critical age when the culture of the Faith was stronger and an effort to demean th subject of a biography was not the all-consuming sine qua non of such books as it is now. Because of this book I began to read as much of DeWohl as I could find. He was a straightforward wordsmith and his Faith shines through in every page. Mr DeWohl has many titles to his credit while also contributing to journals and articles to World Book Encyclopedia. I am very happy to see that his novels are being reprinted in time for another generation to discover him. DeWohl made saints much more real than their official hagiographies ever did. Teenagers especially will find the story of St Catherine eye-opening as they will find DeWohl's other saintly subjects were not made of plaster and synthetic feelings but were men and women of the world who overcame the carnality of life, but only through the help of Jesus Christ.

Very powerful

This is a very uplifting and entertaining read. St.Catherine was one of the most amazing saints the church has ever had. She was a very humble person yet she had great influence on many of the politcal and church leaders of her day. The book starts off with her struggle with her mother who was very stubborn. She wanted Catherine to marry, but Catherine wanted to dedicate her life to God. In the book you read about the many people Catherine led to Christ, many of them were very hard hearted, and her influence on the pope convincing him to come back to Rome. Catherine lived in a very difficult time, there were many wars going on, the church was very divided, and it was also the time of the plague, but through it all Catherine was a shinning light who inspired others. I think anyone interested in the lives of the saints will love this book. I'm looking forward to reading more books by this author.

I read this book in a matter of days. St. Catherine has always interested me, and this book put a new dimension to a very well-known and loved saint. Among other things, this book showed me how Catherine prayed. As she spoke to her Lord, she was filled with fire and persistence, saturated in love for her Lord. Truly a book that sheds light on the true strength of an incredible woman.

It was a good read. My only real negative was the heroine's stubborn determination to sacrifice herself for her land. It was understandable to a certain extent but after a while it just got annoying.

Once I started I couldnt put it down and finished it in one evening. All of the characters in the book were great. Since I have been around cutting horses for 20 years I enjoyed the whole book. Its especially nice when an author does research and is accurate.

WORTH EVERY PENNY

Wow! What a Great find. This book might be twenty some years old

but it still rates at the top of Historical's I've ever read.

They just don't write them like this anymore and that's a pity.

Nowadays romances have to be "correct" which makes them very dull. Quinn and Noelle fight their feelings for each other til

the bitter end. It's edgy and frank but that's what makes this

story so absorbing. The plot is fascinating...the heroine, Noelle and her mother, a would-be actress, are strapped for money. Noelle is only eight when her mother takes her from her bed to escape debt collectors. They end up on the street and eventually in a hovel where the only work her mother can get is

selling her body to men who sometimes pay and sometimes don't.

Noelle sees and understands what's going on and when her beloved

mother dies and Noelle finds herself alone she swears she will never become a whore. So she becomes a pickpocket! The best.

That is until she tries to lift a pocketwatch from the friend of

Quinn Copeland, heir to a shipping empire. Quinn and his father

are at odds and since his father has been insisting Quinn marry

a girl from a upstanding family what better way to get back at

him by marrying this little guttersnipe and depositing her with

his father and then leaving for a year.

Thus begins Noelle's transformation from Ugly Duckling to a beautiful woman. When Quinn returns and realizes the woman he

thinks is his father's mistress is really his wife the sparks fly. The passion is seething as these lovers brutally battle

each other. And there's so much more. Get this book if you can.

You won't be dissapointed especially if your sick and tired of all the lukewarm romances being offered now a days!!

Over joyed to find this publication

I am very happy I found this publication. I had been trying to locate this book through my library. I found it in an interstate search but it was not allowed to be taken out of the library and it was located in the southern part of my state and I live in the northern part. After much searching I found it and purchased it. I love the author even though she wrote under a diffrent name for her first book. I
wanted to be able to say I had read all of her books. Now I can. Thank you for making that possible.

After many months (years?) of trying to obtain this novel - even going so far as to contact SEP - I finally obtained this novel through Amazon. And yes, it was worth every penny.

What interested me was that it was apparent from this novel that SEP was obviously very talented, if not as gentle as she haas later become. The book was well written and a study in characters that grew to understand themselves and each other. Quinn and Noelle grew up in different worlds, yet the same. Quinn's father, Simon, was himself a tormented soul and Quinn could not recognize that fact until the end. As Noelle put it "I am human and not perfect".

This was truly a fantastic historical that was well worth the time and effort to find and read.

This Book Gets Results

Wow!

I actually downloaded this books for a friend who was looking to improve his english speaking. He could already speak a bit of broken English but it wasn't fluent and his conversation would often come across as awkward.

He read this book and most importantly took action on the steps and techniques it teaches and now, after only a few short days his English speaking has improved drastically, continuing to get better every day.

Obviously, I don't personally need to learn how to speak English better but my friend did and with the book, he's getting results.

Your book is an anchor in the vast and deep ocean of learning English. It saved me from frustration and confusion of not knowing how to go from a broken english to fluent, I still have long way to go to have an ideal accent and I might face disappiontments, but at least now I the key to solving the problem thanks for your good work.
The book is good for those know english well but want to speak fluently and faster. I don't have anything more to say.
