About the Author
Masud Ansari, B.A., M.A., Ph. D., D.C.H., F.C.H., holds a B.A. in law, an M.A. in International Relations from the University of London, and three doctorate degrees, two in political science, one from the Tehran University, the Second from the George Washington University, and the third in hypnotherapy from the American Pacific University. He is the author and translator of 33 books on Psychology, law, political science, philosophy, theology and hypnotherapy - in addition to two works of fiction. One of his books, Nationalism, won critical acclaim in 1968. The outcome of his teaching and research in the London University, American University of Beirut, UNAFI (Japan), and Iranian and American Universities has been: Phi Beta Kappa and three President awards - one from the National Guild of Hypnotists (1991) and two from the Eastern Institute of Hypnotherapy (1995).

Islam False Prophet Mohammed Mohammad

The author presents himself as a lawyer and a Washington, D.C.-based hypnotherapist. He doesn't brag much about himself in the "About the Author" paragraph, and barely presents a few more details about his academic credentials on his website. It is clear in this self-published book that the author is well read on the topic of Mohammed, the Koran/Quran, and the hadith; perhaps having something to do with the time he spent living in Iran and Lebanon. From his readings, the author concludes that the Muslim prophet Mohammed (the revealer of Islam) is no believable prophet, but instead is a religious charlatan. From the titles of the book's chapters, one can tell that Muslims will take umbrage with this book: (1) The life of Mohammed. (2) The Koran: a manual for terrorism. (3) Absurdities of the Koran. (4) Astronomy of the Koran. (5) Hadith: The terrorist manifesto of Islam. (6) Mohammed orders death to his opponents. (7) Were Mohammed's inspirations genuine? (8) The mendacious strategies of Mohammed's prophethood. (9) Exile and massacre of the Jews from Medina. (10) The intimidating character of the Koran. (11) Psychology of Mohammed (epilepsy; his inferiority complex; moral insanity; megalomania; the combination of inferiority complex and megalomania; sex maniac). (12) Evaluation of Mohammed's personality in history. Dr. Ansari is strongly on the critical-realist Mark Gabriel-Robert Spencer school of Mohammedism, rather than the Karen Armstrong-John Esposito line. To his credit in making his criticisms, the author quotes very, very frequently from the Quran and the hadith in his analysis of Mohammed's shortcomings as a Holy prophet. Dr. Ansari's contribution to the debunking of Mohammed's prophecy is from his having studied many books about Mohammed, combing through them, collating and explaining many interesting aspects of Mohammed's nefarious life in this lengthy 378-page paperback with an impressive 684 footnotes. Dr. Ansari draped many psychological theories about personality disorders upon Mohammed like a well-tailored thobe, but I was left a little under-whelmed by the soundness of some of the psycho dressings. While this book alludes that it will be a detailed, scholastic analysis of Mohammed's alleged psychological misfits, that book remains to be written. What I particularly liked about this book was the author's extensive review of the various anti-Jewish battles that the Prince of Peace waged: especially in how the author reviewed and cited numerous sources in discussing a particular battle or murder, and how Mohammed had spontaneous revelations of new Quranic ayats from Allah to justify Mohammed's pillages.

Groundbreaking Psychological Analysis of The Historical Mohammed

This is an extraordinary and groundbreaking study of the actual historical figure Mohammed, both from a psychological and sociological perspective. The author grew up in MidEastern Islamic society and is uniquely qualified to translate and explain, to the Western reader, the sociology and dynamics of the traditional Arab culture which produced Mohammed in the 7th Century in what is now Saudi Arabia. To the modern Western reader much of Arab culture is profoundly alien, because although Mohammed consciously borrowed heavily from the successful and thriving Jewish and Christian cultures he observed around him, Arab culture itself was and is profoundly alien from, and largely hostile to, most of the core principles of Judao-Christian philosophy. This creates a profound cognitive dissonance within the psychology of Islam and therefore within the minds of Islamist believers. The author analyses and explains the origins and effects of this complex belief system in a way which is enlightening both to a Western reader but also to readers who grew up with Islam and are seeking answers or insights into the origins and contradictions of that culture and mindset.

The author is clearly a serious scholar of the Koran and quotations abound which the author explores as a means of understanding the psychology and mindset of Mohammed, both as it arose from a violent 7th Century pagan Arab tribal warfare culture and as it evolved through Mohammed's gradual writing (or dictation) over many years of the collection of instructions and exhortations that became the Koran. Dr. Ansari traces the marked change in tone and philosophy once the historical Mohammed gains sufficient followers to achieve status as a local warlord capable of imposing and enforcing his will by beheadings and force, and how the tone of the Koran changes dramatically once he acquires the military power to change tactics to spreading Islam by violent conquest. The author unflinchingly analyses the deadly legacy of violence which has been central to Islam's success and to its appeal since its beginnings. Indeed, one of the great challenges to any study of Islam is that its rapid spread during and immediately after Mohammed's lifetime came by violent force, with all that entails.

This book is essential to anyone seeking a better understanding of Islam through a look at the mind of the historical Mohammed, as revealed in his own words in the Koran.

An Incisive, Realistic Analysis of Muhammad

This book is incisive, based on documented sources, and clearly written so that any reader can understand what the author is conveying. It can only have been written by a person who has grown up inside an Islamic society and has seen unvarnished Islam at work on an everyday basis.

There is not found in this book an airy-fairy idealization of someone's wannabe reality about Muhammad or about the political ideology he cobbled together from Judaism, Christianity, and Arabian mythology. Every statement and analysis Dr. Ansari makes is based personal experience, received information from expert authors on Islam, and on direct quotes from Islamic sources such as the Quran, and the Hadith.

I cannot recommend a more appropriate and succinct source of facts about Muhammad and Islam, especially for the new inquirer into this turbulent subject matter. However, that is not to say that this book is not equally illuminating for those who have personal experience with the amply documented nature of Muhammad.

About the Author
Andrew M. Pomerantz (BA, psychology, Washington University in St. Louis; MA, Ph D, clinical psychology, Saint Louis University) is professor of Psychology and director of the Clinical Adult Psychology Graduate Program at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville. He teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses related to clinical psychology and maintains a part-time private practice of clinical psychology in St. Louis. He completed his pre-doctoral internship at Indiana University School of Medicine Psychology Training Consortium. He is the author of Clinical Psychology: Science, Practice, and Culture (3rd Edition, SAGE, 2013) and Psychological Assessment and Report Writing (with Karen Goldfinger; SAGE, 2010). He has served on the editorial board of the Journal of Clinical Psychology, Ethics & Behavior, and the Journal of Contemporary Psychotherapy. He served two terms as president of Psychotherapy Saint Louis and is a member of the American Psychological Association.

Met Expectations

I bought this textbook for a class, and it arrived quickly and was a good price. I am actually somewhat surprised at the material in the textbook. A lot of it focuses on the practice itself, which I think is an interesting take, as every other psychology textbook I have read focuses primarily on the "big names" in research.

Easy to read and organized well. I always wonder how current textbooks are and if they provide information that accurately represents scientific consensus. This one seems to get most information correct and seems fairly objective when comparing psychological sub-disciplines.

Informative And Useful, But Far More Interesting At The End

I happen to have read this book after finishing two graduate programs, one a Master’s of Science in Engineering Management (a degree that is not mentioned in the course of this book), and the other a Master’s of Arts in Military History, but its information is useful for graduate students in a wide variety of fields seeking either Master’s or Doctoral degrees. As can be expected, this book has a “catch-as-many-as-possible” approach in its topics, preferring to tackle the most popular fields of study and the most popular concerns that insecure would-be graduate students have, meaning that people with unconventional graduate school interests are likely to find less specifically about them, and people of normal backgrounds (i.e. non-disabled straight white males) are likely not to find a lot of information specifically about their graduate school experiences. Caveat lector.

Nonetheless, the book is not completely useless, and indeed there is much information here that any graduate student in any program can learn from. Part One of the book introduces the reader to graduate programs–Chapter One looks at the goals of the reader (presumably a would-be graduate student), Chapter Two looks at finding information about graduate school programs, and Chapter Three looks at evaluating graduate school programs. Part Two covers the process of applying to graduate school–Chapter Four talks about the requirements of graduate programs, Chapter Five talks about preparing the application, Chapter Six talks about the ever-important personal statement, and Chapter Seven talks about what happens after you apply. Part Three is really the most “optional” part of the book for most readers, examining special situations–Chapter Eight looks at re-entry students, Chapter Nine looks at minority students, Chapter Ten looks at students with disabilities, and Chapter Eleven looks at International students. Part Four looks at the least “optional” part of the book, the part on financing the degree–Chapter Twelve looks at planning the investment, Chapter Thirteen examines sources of financial aid, Chapter Fourteen looks at the financial aid application process, and Chapter Fifteen looks at loans. Part Five, perhaps the most interesting part of the book, and certainly the most readable section, looks at specific courses of graduate study, which chapters on social work, education, psychology, nursing, humanities and social sciences, engineering, computer science, health, and science programs. The book closes with a lengthy list of internet resources for the reader who desires further information (especially about nursing).

Overall, the book is very informative, and certainly filled with useful information. There are some minor copy-editing flaws which could have been corrected with a bit more careful fine tooth comb, and the book is perhaps a bit front-loaded with more boring information, only getting really interesting to read towards the end as it talked about specific courses of study. Nonetheless, despite its flaws, it is a worthy resource for those seeking to attend graduate school with the desire to do it right, or at least begin with eyes wide open.

An interesting and important perspective on the modern American debate surrounding vaccination.

In Vaccine: The Debate in Modern America, Largent couples historical scholarship, keen cultural observations, and personal experiences in order to explore the American debate surrounding vaccination. Largent's engaging, provocative and compelling argument suggests that the debate about the science, safety and efficacy of vaccination is a proxy for a set of unaddressed underlying anxieties regarding vaccines; therefore, science is not enough to resolve it. The book sets out to explore these anxieties and understand where and how they originated. Largent's insightful observations provide ways in which the debate can be moved forward by addressing the anxieties parents have directly. Largent argues that by ignoring the underlying anxieties public health officials and vaccine advocates have misconstrued the reasons parents chose not to vaccinate or delay vaccination. Secondly, public health officials prefer to discuss the efficacy, and safety of vaccines because this is within their professional realm. Vaccine advocates often claim that ignorance is one of the reasons parents are anxious about vaccinating their children. They claim that this refusal to vaccinate is predicated by an ignorance of the severity of the diseases for which vaccines protect. Whereas, data demonstrates that the more educated parents are the more likely they are to have reservations about the recommended vaccine schedule. One of the most important observations made by Largent is that not all vaccines are the same thus recognizing that not all vaccines are equal could sooth the rhetoric of the debate and allow for a more fruitful discussion. Otherwise, parents who are anxious about the amount of vaccines or one specific vaccine may be pushed not to vaccinate at all. Failing to recognize the differences between different inoculations results in an all or nothing approach.L argent recognizes and emphasizes (throughout the book) that there is no evidence linking vaccines to autism or other ailments. The book also deals extensively and in a sympathetic manner with both Wakefield (who alleged that the MMR vaccine was link to autism) and Jenny McCarthy (who claims vaccines can cause autism). This sympathy is an important tool that historians need to employ in order to adequately portray the view of the historical actors they are writing about.

This book will be of interest to those interested in skepticism, science and its relation to public policy, public health, the vaccine debates, and the ever increasing complex relationship between science and society. Arguably it also provides a useful way to think and address contemporary debates regarding science and the public (the teaching of evolution; global climate change, etc).

About the Author
David L. Oakford is a Michigan man in his 40's who lives with his wife and family in the Metro Detroit area. He is an accountant who works in the computer software industry. Since his 1979 near death experience David completed a US Navy enlistment and then earned his accounting degree. David is a member of the International Association of Near Death studies.

Experience the Agony & Ecstasy of a Near Death Experience

SOUL BARED tells the heart-wrenching tale of one man's near death experience in 1979. Author David Oakford set his pride aside to describe every aspect of his experience, including the not-so-flattering descriptions of how he came so close to death through a drug overdose. As each gland and organ in his body shut down, one by one, he could hear and see how it's song and rhythm stilled to silence... until all that remained was an eerie silence. Oakford's attention next turned to his immediate surroundings, and how he was confused to find that although he could move about, running was difficult... and although he could see and hear things, he could not see his reflection in a mirror and nobody seemed to hear him even when he shrieked and cried.

SOUL BARED really takes off when Oakford meets his guardian angel, who he calls Bob. Bob helped to explain the meaning of the colored auras that Oakford saw around everyone and everything, describing how each person's aura is useful in viewing to see how much and what kind of work needs to be done for that person's best development. The more brilliant the color, the higher the vibration. Bob went on to describe elemental energy beings, dark souls, the spirit of Gaia and beings of higher vibration, as Oakford looked around at the world through new eyes. The chapters in which Oakford describes meeting a group of angelic spirits are extraordinary for their clarity, as Oakford describes the choice he was given before returning to his body and resuming his life.

I am deeply moved by SOUL BARED, as it inspires me to live up my true spiritual nature and original purpose on Gaia at this time. Readers who have had near death experiences will especially love this book, as it's the next best thing to feeling all the agony and ecstasy of a near death experience. I give this book my highest recommendation.

A Fascinating Shared Experience in Need of an Editor

That David L. Oakford's book is touching and a page-turner is undeniable: no matter the reader's religious or spiritual beliefs this story has power and the ability to ignite the imagination. The honesty of approach of Oakford in putting into book form the experience he had after an accidental overdose of PCP in 1979 manages to pull the reader into the journey of metaphysical discovery: it is difficult to read the book with a critical eye, but if the author expects to write more, then there are some technical issues that he must face.

Oakford is not a trained writer and the fact that he so capably translated the untranslatable experience he had is a major accomplishment. Out of a life of self-destructive and mean spirited behavior Oakford takes a dose of PCP. Soaring out of his earthbound (Gaia) body and encountering 'an extremely beautiful Spirit Being' whom he names 'Bob' (!), Oakford soars through the universe with his guardian angel, observing the pyramids of Egypt, the planets, the Southwest US, and the planet earth/Gaia, learning about the positive and negative energy and aura of the various portions of the planet, the concept of immortality, the choices the soul makes, and the possibilities of making the world different through the true power of love and understanding. He then returns to earth and proceeds into a life changed.

The possibilities of Oakford's lessons from his experience are endless and combine the finest assets of all the spiritual philosophies of the world...and more. The problem with his narration is the lack of an editor's eye and hand to erase the typos and correct syntax and sentence structure - factors that could elevate this book into a viable format for a wider market.

But these are quibbles and the fact that Oakford would translate his near death experience into a readable form is a worthy reason to join him in sharing this mission. And in the long run his honesty as a first time writer speaks loudly, providing food for thought and contemplation in a world so desperately in need of finding solace in the chaos we have created. One of the best books on the near-death experience that I
have read!
Outstanding and highly Inspirational!

David Oakford's book "Soul Bared: A Metaphysical Journey"
describes his journey to find life's meaning which culminated
with an extremely profound near-death experience for which he
gained deep spiritual insights. His near-death experience is one
of a few near-death experiences that has really had a profound
impact on my life and I have read thousands of near-death
experiences. David's book has greatly enhanced my life and my
own journey. I rank David's "Soul Bared" right up there with the
great NDE books such as Betty Eadie's "Embraced By The Light"
and Dr. George Ritchie's "Return From Tomorrow". David's book
stands out even more from these great books because
David's "Soul Bared" describes the journey in metaphysical terms
which Eadie and Ritchie could not describe in their books.
David's journey will greatly enhance and enlighten your own
metaphysical journey. You will discover his near-death
experience to be one of the most detailed and insightful near-
death experiences ever documented. I highly recommend his book
for everyone and especially to anyone who has recently lost a
loved one. David's "Soul Bared" will speak to your own soul and
confirm in your heart and mind that life truly does go on after
death and that it is a beautiful experience. David's book is
just what is needed for this world. It is a beacon of light
shining in a dark world and it couldn't have been published at a
more urgent time in human history. David has the secret that can
unite this world as one and bring universal unconditional love
to all humanity. I believe this book is destined to become a
classic and a great source of inspiration to people all over the
world. This world certainly needs more love and David's "Soul
Bared" contains the formula to shine the light of love in the
hearts of all. It is a book whose time has come. It is a message
