About the Author
ROBERT SLAVIN is director of the Center for Research and Reform in Education, Johns Hopkins University, professor at the Institute for Effective Education at the University of York (England), and chairman of the Success for All Foundation. He received his Ph.D. in Social Relations from Johns Hopkins in 1975, and since that time he has authored more than 200 articles and book chapters on such topics as cooperative learning, ability grouping, school and classroom organization, desegregation, mainstreaming, research review, and evidence-based reform. Dr. Slavin has received numerous awards, including the Raymond Cattell Early Career Award for Programmatic Research from the American Educational Research Association (1985), the Palmer O. Johnson Award for the best article in an AERA journal (1988, 2008), the Charles A. Dana Award (1994), the James Bryant Conant Award from the Education Commission of the States (1998), the Distinguished Services Award from the Council of Chief State School Officers (2000), and the AERA Review of Research award (2009). He was elected an AERA Fellow in 2010.

SUPER GRATEFUL for SUPER GREAT PRICE

Wow! I am more than satisfied with this order! I am GRATEFUL for this low price of $85.85!!! I gave up on buying this book because my school's store sold it for more than $200!!! That's too freaking expensive; I already had a crap ton of other textbooks and school materials to buy, and with my bugdet for the Fall Semester, I just couldn't afford the book at that price. So I started committing myself to borrowing the school library's book for 2 hours at a time. This was very inconvinient because to use course textbooks from the library, you must use it only within the library. So I practically lived in that library just so I could borrow the text book.

But I woke up one day and gave Amazon a shot; I was browsing through Amazon, and that's when I found this textbook for $85 freaking dollars!! Boy was I happy! I couldn't believe my eyes! I placed that my order in a heartbeat and then did my happy dance :)

At first I was worried that maybe it was cheap because the quality was good or something. BUT NO! The book that I received was exactly the same one that my school's store was selling, and the school's library had in store. The book is colorless and is meant to be put in a binder, but that's how this textbook is supposed to be. That is its original form--how the company made it. Nothing fishy about it. So if you're complaining about how this is such a "bad quality" because it's a loose-leaf form, you won't find anything better out there. A lot of college textbooks come in loose-leaf form--you're gonna have to deal with it. The pages are not even that thin. And the book comes with the full online access code. You're getting everything you need; so what more do you want? I'm super grateful for this book at this price. It's 2 times cheaper than the school store, I don't know why. Amazon, you're a lifesaver ;)

Missing pages in text

I opened the text to complete a reasing assignment for chapters 1-3 and the book skips from page 4 to 37, right out of the shrink wrap! I can go online to read it, but I learn better reading from text and am dissapointed that I am not able to use the physical text. The rest of the book is there from what I can gather, just the beginning is missing

HUMBLE HEROINE

A very enjoyable story. Just like other Sarah Morgan's stories, it's sweet, light but a very knowledgeable and enjoyable choice of words. The author is one of my favorites I have almost all her books. Love the heroine. Although born from a silver spoon upbringing, she is very humble, beautiful in and out and a great doctor. The hero, of course is a tall gorgeous brilliant doctor too. Although how can you get that in 10 years medical education I don't have any idea. But this books is supposed to be light, entertaining and enjoyable. So readers are allowed to fantasize.

This was a moving story of love crossed lovers who seem to never get a break

Eleven years after their passionate affair Jago see's Katy in his hospital. He is shocked to see that she is now his A&E doctor. When he last seen her she was a fashion model. Lies had been told to him in the past but will they ever see the light? Will he be able to move on, will he ever tell her of the love he had/has for her? Who tore them apart? And why? Will this second chance be enough to hold them together. I enjoyed the story of betrayal of family members who tore them apart. Will be reading more by Sarah Morgan in the future.

Very Sweet and Passionate Love Story

The Spanish Consultant is one of those books that you feel sad to finish and place in your favorites folder. It was a very sweet story of reunited lovers and how strong their love was. The story is set in England and the lead characters are phenomenal! Ms. Morgan wrote a great story that resonates throughout your heart and will make you laugh and wish for a hero like Jago.

Read this book and you will truly enjoy it.

David Horowitz, a former liberal and their most hated apostate, writes clearly amd concisely answering the questions: Who is the Left? What is their agenda? How do Amercians stop them?

The goal,” he begins, “is to put Democrats on the offensive… to expose their hypocrisy and turn their firepower against them… The strategy is to go for the jugular.” Conservatives generally are uncomfortable with the idea of political brawling, even when on the ropes as they have been throughout the Obama years. But Horowitz stresses that if your first response to, say, the left’s kneejerk use of the race card is to go on the defensive, then you are losing. “To turn around the political battles conservatives have been losing for so long, they must begin every confrontation by punching progressives in the mouth,” he declares, referring to boxer Mike Tyson’s famous observation that “everybody has a game plan until you punch them in the mouth.” Donald Trump is better suited to pursuing such a strategy than any Republican leader in recent memory.

Horowitz goes on to note that the right must attack the left with equal moral force, particularly at the Democrats’ Achilles heel: their atrocious record on race as exemplified in their monopoly control of America’s inner cities and the suffering and misery they have wrought there."

Very insighful book with practical specific advice.

I found this book very insightful about how things really work. I deeply believe in the concept of even deal and I deeply believe that anyone that denies it, is only not aware of it. I also believe that people that are still single have a hidden block to meeting their soulmate. My personal experience is very much so. All of the single people I know do not moan about meeting a soulmate like I did. I met my soulmate and it was very much how this book describes it. I believe Tara is a highly aware individual and is able to see to the source of things. I recommend this book for anyone on their mission to find their soulmate. If you gotten as far as finding this book you are well on your way. Do not give up, it actually happens!

Tara Springett is a Buddhist and a Counsellor and it shows. There has obviously been a great deal of thought put into the subject of this book;- relationships between couples. Tara explains, in clear language, what is needed to have and maintain a relationship which is truly authentic, satisfying and loving.
Within the first chapters, she gives a guided meditation which is simple but powerful. It is about how to release toxic emotions and thoughts about relationships with others.
Although the author is a practising Buddhist and refers to spiritual values, she has not written a New Age pop psychology book, but one which will speak to each individual in a clear and helpful way.
Some subjects covered are; why we are attracted to those who are similiar, yet why we need to be with those who are different in character from us.
Tara explains why we need to commit to our soul mate and how to move towards true happiness.
Her book clearly spells out the path of the true soul mate in a relationship and what each person needs to do in order for both to grow.
I particularly appreciated the examples from Tara's clinical experience. They were appropriate and provided welcome insights.
This book is not filled with dry facts or fanciful concepts. It is a concise road map for those who are genuinely interested in finding or keeping a life partner. Trap-falls for the unwary, how to deal with former failed relationships, how to set the stage for meeting your soul mate, even how to fight correctly within your relationship, all are covered in this book.
There are exercises, meditations and tips on finding, keeping and growing emotionally and spiritually, with your soul mate.
Tara has studied Tantra extensively, so tips about sexual chemistry and how to keep the passion burning are included as well.
An interesting, well written book from an author who delivers 'steak on the plate' not 'pie in the sky'. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

I am 51 and single. I was in a long term relationship for over 25 years. My former partner and I are still very connected and I knew that for me to move on I had to understand this connection. I believe certain people in my life to be "soulmates" and this gave me clarity and an emotional grounding that I didn't have before. This book will give you some very deep insights into relationships and how to move forward in the most harmonious ways to get the most of out all of your relationships. This work is based on "Morte d' Arthur" written by Sir Thomas Malory. This story, which has so deeply impressed itself upon the hearts and minds of men, centers on the shadowy but heroic figure of Arthur, king of the Britons in the 5th or 6th century. It has flowed over time by being told by various authors, and on this current it carried the elements of all the influences and ideals that were gradually determining the nature and standards of the English-speaking world. An excellent and readable introduction to Arthurian legends!

Who hasn't heard of King Arthur and the knights of his Round Table? In this book you meet them all - including the magician Merlin, and the brave knights Sir Launcelot, Sir Gareth, Sir Tristam, Sir Bors, Sir Kay, and Sir Galahad. All the old favorites are included - Arthur drawing the sword out of the stone, Arthur receiving the sword Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake, and Arthur's marriage to Guinevere. But this is just the beginning of excitement - followed by numerous quests and adventures of the knights, including the Quest for the Holy Grail. This book is chock-full of entertaining adventures involving knights in shining armour, damsels in distress, fierce jousting and sword fights to the death, battles against hoards of enemies and giants, tournaments and miracles.
The medieval setting is painted in a rather idealized fashion, limited to the nobility and figures of the court, who embrace all that is beautiful, brave and noble. These virtues are sometimes portrayed rather simplistically, as unknown knights engage in mortal combat, and only after they have virtually killed each other do the introductions begin: "What is your name?" Behind this medieval mayhem is a heightened sense of chivalry more reflective of legend than fact, where knights battle to the death for the sake of a woman - even one they have only just met. But isn't that what the Arthurian legends are all about? Nobody is under the illusion that they are to be taken too seriously. Journeying to Arthur's Camelot is a form of escapism - suspend your sense of disbelief, watch the flashing swords and fearful battles, and enjoy.
That's not to say that the Arthurian tales do not reflect any reality. Arthur's world is in many respects a real medieval world. Medieval beliefs in paganism and Christianity are evident throughout. Witchcraft and enchantment is presented as alive and deadly, and conversely the true religion - in this case the beliefs of the medieval Catholic church - is evident throughout as knights commend themselves to God in prayer, thank him for his help, and even repent from their sins. The whole notion of the Holy Grail is of course a very Christian tradition - although a tradition that represents more fiction than fact. And the moral virtues of justice, truth and right for which the honorable knights fight are still noble ideals of virtue today. Arthur's kingdom is presented as a kingdom blessed by the grace of God, a beacon of light symbolizing all that is good and true and right, and a worthy model for kingdoms in today's world because it revolves around timeless virtues. Tales that promote dignity, courtesy, courage, respect for right, respect for female dignity and purity are as ennobling as they are entertaining.
How much truth there is behind the Arthurian tales will always be the subject of debate. The fact remains that there is an extensive and confusing body of legend to wade through. In this work, Green has essentially followed Malory's fifteenth century classic "Morte d'Arthur." But unlike most other writers, such as Sir James Knowles, Green has made some significant improvements:
1. Firstly, the traditional Arthurian tales are a confusing mass of legends. But Green consciously weaves all the tales together as part of a single pattern. He needs to take some liberties with legend in order to achieve this, but these alterations are minor, and the end result is a plausible reconstruction with a clear development, revolving around the establishment of Arthur's kingdom, its climax with the successful quest for the Holy Grail, and subsequent downfall.
2. Secondly, most other collections slavishly follow the body of legend inherited by Thomas Malory. Green follows Malory in the main, but has researched the legends carefully for himself, and also incorporates some Arthurian legends not found in Malory.
These innovations of Green result in a very readable and successful version of the Arthurian tales, and yet one that does not significantly sacrifice faithfulness to legend. Those looking for a more historical reflection of the Arthurian tales would do well to turn to a version of Malory, such as that by Sir James Knowles. And those looking for a more developed and extensive modern version where the author has taken liberties beyond the original legends, would enjoy the classic work by Howard Pyle. But as a faithful, plausible and enjoyable introduction to the tales, you can't go wrong with this superb effort by Green.
Most readers looking to be introduced to the Arthurian legends need look no further than this collection by Green. It's not as grand as Malory, but it's a better read. There is no end to the accomplishments of sword and sorcery, adventures and quests. To our sorrow, Arthur's kingdom ends in darkness and disgrace, but not before it has shone with a wonderful and memorable light. Along with the tales of Robin Hood, the tales of King Arthur are the most exciting tales that British history has produced. This is the stuff of legend, and it's worth a read.

Not the version I would suggest

It's curious to me that this is the best-selling version of the King Arthur story in the kindle store, because it's a singularly flawed collection, well-eclipsed by other variants that are also available for free online; I suspect its popularity is an artifact of the search engine, not the book's own merits.

The author, Sir James Knowles, was an architect and friend of Tennyson, best known for founding the Metaphysical Society; this is, therefore, a very Victorian Arthur. In this case, "victorian" means "bowdlerized to the point of inanity." The story of Merlin's enchantment of Uther and Igraine to arrange Arthur's conception is almost completely elided ("When Uther, therefore, was at length happily wedded" -- yep, that's the whole story); Sir Tristram is apparently completely chaste with Iseult (King Mark just doesn't like him for some indiscernible reason) and even when Lancelot and Guinevere are caught together and the entire course of the story turns on adultery, such that bowdlerization was completely impossible, Gawain suggests that "it may well be that Lancelot was in her chamber for no evil." The story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight is simply not included at all.

I suppose that kind of bowdlerization might be acceptable in a children's version of the Arthur stories, but this edition isn't good for that either, for two reasons: 1) like many free kindle ebooks, all illustrations have been removed, and 2) it's a kindle edition, and who gives a $250 ebook reader to a child too young to read a story with adultery in it?

There are other problems also. The King of Gaul (Sir Bors) is an ally for the first third and last third of the book, but in the middle, Gaul has a different king, Flollo, and Arthur conquers Gaul six ways from Sunday (mostly as a stopover in his conquest of Rome); timelines don't add up; so on, so forth. I didn't feel the author did a good job of telling the Arthur legends, in any particular. In short, this is a bad version of the King Arthur story and the general reader would be better off not wasting time on it.

I'm sure people are going to say "hey, it's an early victorian version, don't hold it to such high standards," but there's no reason for a modern reader to read these, any more than there's reason to read Sir Thomas Bowdler's "Family Shakespeare". For more "historical" versions of the Arthur legend, either of this versions' main source materials -- Geoffrey of Monmouth's _History of the Kings of Britain_ or Sir Thomas Malory's _Morte D'Arthur_ -- are superior reads (though I'll admit you'd want to skim Monmouth heavily). My own personal favorite, Howard Pyle's three-book version of the Arthur story ("The Story of King Arthur and His Knights," "The Story of the Champions of the Round Table," and "The Story of the Grail and the Passing of Arthur") is similarly available for free online in the public domain, can be found with excellent illustrations by Pyle himself, is written in a fashion suitable for children and adults, and does a far better job of capturing the romance of the Arthur legends.

But whatever version you pick, this one is a poor place to start. It does have some strengths -- chiefly an encylopedic compilation of at least some version of almost every PG Arthur-related tale -- but the author's victorian mores seem to have twisted far too many of the stories into unrecognizability. Not recommended.

A dignified and beautiful introduction to the legends

I have loved the tales of Camelot since I was quite small. Due to this, several friends have asked me where they should begin. Over and over again, I recommend Green. His work is not majestic like Malory, but much easier to read and follow, especailly for a neophyte. Children love it, as do adults; this book gives the basic nobility of the tales, giving a good clue as to why they've been so popular for so long. Green also includes several tales of Sir Gawain, so he is not the near-felon he seems in several late medieval texts. The books is charming, moving, sad, happy, and everything else you could wish from Camelot. If you haven't read of Arthur before, begin here; if you want to remember why you loved these tales to begin with, read Green. He provides more than you would ever expect.
