Charming and magnetic

Something So Right was a cute, enjoyable, short read. And that about sums it up. It's a fast-paced romance, with a decent amount of steaminess and sexual tension. It's one of those books that is fun to read on a long, cold evening, when you're sitting in your comfy chair, wrapped up in a blanket with a hot cup of chocolate in your hand. It makes a great experience. It's nice. Not exactly a mind-blowing piece of literature, but a decent short novel with a solid plot, likable characters and love that is both sweet and hot at the same time.

Sam Denning and Lily Carver are long time best friends. Sam was always around to help whenever Lily needed him. They are both undeniably attracted to each other yet neither of them is willing to take the first step and actually turn their friendship into something even more meaningful. They both want it. Deep inside they know they are perfect for each other. They fantasize about each other (and trust me when I say, these fantasies will make your cheeks burn!), have fun together and support each other in times of need. What's sweeter than a romance that develops from an already wonderful and strong friendship? If only things were that simple! Lily was recently hurt, she carries a lot of baggage and she's can't seem to be able to put the past behind her. She's damaged and unwilling to throw herself into yet another potentially hurtful relationship. There are no obvious reasons to believe that Sam would treat her with anything else than love and respect, but we all know how it works: once bitten, twice shy. Not to mention that it never even crossed her mind that Sam could possibly be interested in her or return her feelings in any way. Unfortunately, the same goes for Sam. He doesn't want to make a move, because what is she doesn't like him back? He could lose his best friend and he certainly doesn't want that! And so we're stuck in a loop, with two people who love each other and don't really know what to with that. What will happen to these two? Curious? Read Something So Right and find out for yourself. It's definitely worth it. There's a lot going on on these 160 pages, more than you could imagine!

What I liked the best about this story? Sam. He was so fan-freaking-tastic! So sensitive, caring, supportive, loving, warm, cheerful.. Not to mention totally gorgeous! A perfect man in every way! Where do you get a guy like that?! Lily, on the other hand, well, she went through a lot and didn't quite know how to deal with all that. She wasn't exactly my favorite heroine. I didn't like the way she acted and some of her decisions were simply hard for me to understand, but in the end I kind of got where it was coming from. I wished she was a little bit more open and trusting and wouldn't be so consistent in pushing Sam away or determined not to assign meaning to whatever was happening between the two of them. I mean, yeah, I get that you went through some heavy crap and you're having trouble getting over it, but cut the guy some slack. He's not just any random guy met on the street, he's your best friend. Someone who was always there for you! And he's so freaking hot! :)

But these are just minor annoyances, nothing that would make me want to throw the book out the window or shred it to pieces with gardening scissors. I genuinely liked Something So Right. It was a charming, sweet little read. It's not the most beautiful love story ever, nor is it some sort of life-changing, heart-wrenching epic romance, but it doesn't aspire to be one at all. It's a simple, cute love story, filled with some cheek-reddening scenes and vivid, realistic descriptions. The plot is solid, the characters are believable, the storytelling is smooth - I don't know about you guys, but in my world that makes a pretty awesome book!
I'm excited to read more of Elyse Mady's books and I'm definitely going to be picking one up soon!

Too much angst for these friends to lovers

One of my favorite types of romances to read is the "Friends Turned Lovers" plotline. You know, where the girl and boy have been best friends forever and finally cross that line and become perfectly matched mates because they have such a strong foundation for their growing relationship. When I read the premise for SOMETHING SO RIGHT I thought it would be a great fit for me. Unfortunately, I couldn't really connect with the characters to care if they finally got together in the end or not.

Lily Carver is a survivor of domestic abuse, both physically and emotionally, at the hands of her ex-fianc�. She's fled the big city to own and operate an upscale resort near her longtime (best) friend Sam Denning. Sam has loved Lily since the summer they met when he was only 14. When he finally puts the moves on Lily, she lays down her own rules: no-strings-attached affair limited to two weeks only. Lily doesn't believe she can offer long-term relationship or any real relationship after the last disaster she fled from. Sam is just biding his time to let Lily realize that they could be great together.

There were several things wrong for me:

First, this story didn't start off well for me. It opens up with Sam fantasizing about Lily and all the dirty, naughty things he wants to do to her hips and legs and to rub his *fill in the blank* against/along her *fill in the blank* and so the descriptions continue. Then we get pages and pages of him pining for Lily and all the angst of being only a friend and how horrible his childhood was (but we're not really sure why it was so horrible.) Then insert a few paragraphs of conversation between Lily and Sam. Then, cut over to Lily who complains about the strict upbringing of being a Carver and "A Carver never cries" etc. etc. and angst over her past and Sam is looking hot and fantasize over his body, etc. etc.

Second, the book yo-yo's around between angst, sexual fantasies, angst, sex, angst, projected insecurities, angst, sex, more projected insecurities, and I think you get the picture.

Third, the characters didn't evolve at all. Well, sure we do get from point A to point B in the story, but the characters were just 1 dimensional and never fully fleshed out and would have sudden change in thinking. So I guess they did evolve.

Fourth, Lily's request for a no-strings-attached affair was just awkward and felt completely wrong.

Fifth, everyone and everyone wanted to talk to Sam or Lily about their feelings about the other. Everyone "knew" that Sam loved Lily and wanted to confront him about it and give him a pep-talk to get him to confess to Lily. Everyone knew that Lily had feelings for Sam deep down and just wanted her to realize that he wouldn't wait around. The only conversations Sam or Lily had with others revolved around Sam or Lily with the exception of the "big town scandal" toward the end of the book.

Even though I love "Friends to Lovers" stories, this one just didn't work for me. I don't know if I just wasn't in the mood for THIS type of "Friends to Lovers" story, but the abundance of angst and sexual fantasies just killed it for me.

Something So Right

Sam and Lily have been friends since they were 14 years old. Sam has been in love with his best from since they first met but has never told her or acted on it in any way. He's watched from the sidelines as Lily became engaged to another man and then was there for her as she suffered through a traumatic breakup before she tied the knot. Although Sam did not the all the details of the break up, he was there for her unconditionally.

Lily has feelings that go beyond friendship for Sam as well but due to the circumstances of her break-up with her fiance, she doesn't want to become in involved with any man, much less her best friend. She feels that Sam is a forever kind of guy who deserves a woman who can give him the same. But when mutual caring and attraction lead to a very hot encounter, Sam is ready to push for more from Lily. Lily puts the breaks on fast but then has a change of heart later when she realizes she misses sex and proposes that they enter into a friends with benefits situation, no strings attached, and then they'll end their affair after a period of time.

I loved Sam. He had a hard childhood, took care of his younger sisters and has worked hard his whole life. He's loyal, and steadfast and head over heals in love with Lily. But he's no saint--his dirty thoughts about Lily and the things he'd like to do with her are just enough to scuff up that squeaky clean image and make him a swoon worthy hero.

Lily on the other hand was a bit of a mess for lack of a better word. She has quite a lot of emotional baggage but still, I had a hard time excusing her behavior toward Sam at times. She feels Sam is deserving of a forever kind of girl, and so she keeps her distance romantically even though she has feelings for him. But then she flips and proposes a friends with benefits relationship when she decides she misses sex. The reason this didn't totally work for me is because Sam and Lily are supposed to be best friends so she must have picked up on at least some kind of "I have stronger feelings than friendship for you" vibe from Sam. I had a hard time believing they could be so close and she could be totally oblivious to his feelings and so her proposal seemed selfish to me. On the other hand, it only fueled my sympathy for Sam and I really wanted him to have his happily ever after.

Something So Right is filled with emotional angst and smoking hot sexual tension. Two best friends who have a mutual admiration for one another with one secretly in love with the other for years is a wonderful set up for a very romantic story. And this is a romantic story with a nice little happily ever after at the end. Despite a few problems I had with the heroine, I enjoyed this emotional story of two friends who eventually find love with each other.

One of a kind guide to building plastic model ships

This is a valuable and frequently used guide on my model ship workbench. Written with the novice plastic model shipbuilder in mind, Wilkins de-mystifies the process of building a kit containing hundreds of parts, with complex instructions for sails and rigging. The pictures clearly show that with patience and the tips contained in this book, one can build a museum-quality sailing ship model comparable with scratch-built wooden ones. His technique for weathering a ship's copper bottom is excellent; I used it to realistically weather Revell's 1/96 "USS United States". The section on building the "USS President" (sister ship to the "USS Constitution" is a good systematic approach to modifiying and completing a complex model kit. The illustrations are excellent. I hope to make it up to the museum in Wisconsin to see Wilkins' collection of model ships.

Excellent basic book on building plastic sailing ships

I've used this book as a basic guide to building and enhancing several fully-rigged plastic model ships, and it is excellent. Besides having outstanding closeup photographs of built-up ships, basic modeling techniques are illustrated in step-by-step fashion, culminating in a complete chapter covering the construction of a 1/96 scale model of the USS President (modified from the USS Constitution). I especially found useful the special tips on hull strengthening and rigging, which are quite different with plastic models

Richard Sibbes was born at Tostock, Suffolk, in 1577 and went to school in Bury St Edmunds. His father, a good sound-hearted Christian , at first intended that Richard should follow his own trade as a wheelwright, but the boy s 'strong inclination to his books, and well-profiting therein' led to his going up to St John's College, Cambridge in 1595. He was converted around 1602-3 through the powerful ministry of Paul Bayne, the successor of William Perkins in the pulpit of Great St Andrew's Church.


After earning his B.D. in 1610, Sibbes was appointed a lecturer at Holy Trinity Church, Cambridge. Later, through the influence of friends, he was chosen to be the preacher at Gray's Inn, London, and he remained there until 1626. In that year he returned to Cambridge as Master of St Catherine's Hall, and later returned to Holy Trinity, this time as its vicar. He was granted a Doctorate in Divinity in 1627, and was thereafter frequently referred to as 'the heavenly Doctor Sibbes'. He continued to exercise his ministry at Gray's Inn, London, and Holy Trinity, Cambridge, until his death on 6 July 1635 at the age of 58.


The Trust publishes the Works of Richard Sibbes in seven volumes, together with a number of his writings in the Puritan Paperbacks and Pocket Puritans series. Volume 1 of the Works contains a Memoir of Sibbes by the editor, Alexander B. Grosart.

God Delights In Such A Heart

This pocket Puritan book is taken from 'The Banner Of Truth's' paperback Josiah's Reformation.Richard Sibbes in his preaching and writing was not aiming for mere outward reformation,it was directed to the heart(the inner man).In the intro.p.12 "No,hearts must be turned ,and evil desires eclipsed by stronger ones for Christ." The author understood that the strength and vigor of a godly life flows from one that has communed closely with the Lord Jesus and desires an ever closer walk with Him.Speaking of Mr.Sibbes(Michael Reeves writes in the intro.)"knowing God's love he became loving"-love and grace are similar in this way(the more we have experienced the grace of God,the more gracious we can be with our fellow man).

The writer gives us one of the essential components of a tender heart-p.52"...a true,tender heart yields to the Word of God,and is fit to run on any errand."-Whatever service the Lord may have for you,a heart that is tender will equip you for that task.

Pastor Sibbes gives wise and godly counsel on how to preserve a tender heart-p.28-29 "...by all means take heed of the least sin against conscience,for the least sin in this kind makes way to hardness of heart." A conscience that is seared and not sensitive to sin strikes at the heart of spiritual strength and vitality,it has a crippling effect upon one's spiritual life. Another preservative is to labor for a legal and evangelical faith-p.27 "It is the nature of faith to see things absent as present before us ... so faith setting the day of judgement before our eyes,will make us to tremble." When we read or hear of the Lord's judgements upon the ungodly and impenitent,often these things appear to be far off,like a distant dream but faith brings these realities nearer to us,so that the impression of them upon our hearts and minds are not easily dismissed(this can have a sanctifying effect upon our lives,a preservative against taking sin lightly.That is why we are exhorted in the word of God 'to set our hearts and minds upon the things above'.

Richard Sibbes was very influential in the lives of some of the Puritans who would be part of the Westminster assembly and would produce perhaps the finest confession of faith that has been written.His written ministry is highly valued by many who earnestly seek to be godly and useful in Christ's Church.

Great book, great author, one of the very best Puritan writers. It will reach your heart. The Puritan writers are closer to the real truth than any I have ever read, except for J.L. Packer who also loves the Puritans.

Richard Sibbes is one of the best and this little book is well worth the price and the time to devour! My wife and I have both read this in one sitting and will re-visit it again and again. Buy it...you won't regret it.

For the die-hard Sandman fan only

If you already have all 4 volumes of The Absolute Sandman, Vol. 1 on your shelf, you'll be pleased to know that this finely-crafted collection, though thinner than any of the Sandman volumes, will look equally pleasing on your shelf. However, if you're not a collector with money to burn, you should think carefully. This is a very expensive comic book, and disappointingly short on content.

There are two issues of The Sandman in here (#8 and #20), a handful of short pieces (only one of which, "Death and Venice," memorable for me), and a hundred pages of miscellany (sketches, promotional pieces, a curious pamphlet about AIDS called "Death Talks About Life"). All of this felt like fluff to me. The meat of the volume is two 3-part stories: "The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life." I was indifferent to the latter, but "The High Cost of Living" is a very solid short story in the classic Neil Gaiman tradition. Fortunately, it's available in a much cheaper volume: Death: The High Cost of Living

If you're on a budget, you can live without Absolute Death.

Yes, this book is a bit overpriced if you pay full list price. However, like the other volumes in DC's "Absolute" series, it is very high quality. Since the two Death miniseries ("The High Cost of Living" and "The Time of Your Life") were only three issues apiece, some padding was needed to make this into an Absolute. It was originally to be called "The Compleat Death", but it was later changed into an Absolute, perhaps so it would match the Absolute Sandman volumes on the shelf (which it does). Note that if you have Absolute Sandman Vol. 1, two stories in that volume also appear here (#8 and #20), along with the Death story from the "Endless Nights" graphic novel, a few short vignettes, the Death Talks About Sex PSA pamphlet, the Death Gallery (which benefits the most from the larger format), a merchandise gallery and Neil Gaiman's complete script for Sandman #8 (with the original pencils). "The High Cost of Living" (which has been relettered for this edition) is the highlight of this book; it is here that penciler Chris Bachalo created the version of the character that would become most familiar to comics fans for the next decade. The original printing of Death: The High Cost of Living #1 erroneously split up a 2-page sequence (the left half of a splash page appeared on the right, and you had to turn the page to see the right side of the picture). No such problems here. This is the definitive Death collection. It is probably not worth $100, but if you buy it with a discount from Amazon or otherwise can pick it up as a discount, it may be worth it. Note: I don't think anything has been recolored, with the exception of Sandman #8 (which was also in Absolute Sandman Vol. 1).

worth every penny

So I won't waste time recapping what is in this collection.. the other reviewers cover it pretty well. However, I will call attention to 1) the astounding beauty that the larger Absolute format brings to the work, 2) the complete-ness you feel in this collection (its got all the major Death in it - if you were a Death-goth kid you may not have wanted to buy Absolute Sand 1 just for the 2 Death issues, so they are included here - I see that as very reader-friendly of DC), 3) how great it is in connection with the 4 Sandman collections - amazingly amazing. Gaiman is an incarnation in his own right, and 4) how much I love DC for including the Death / AIDS pamphlet. It is surprisingly hard to find, and yet of great interest as an historical comic artifact and something that is still relevant to this day - using comics as education never gets old, especially when it promotes understanding and tolerance. If you're a Gaiman fan, a Death fan, a Sandman fan, or all of the above, buy this - just don't pay full price (it's worth it, but save yourself some dough, eh!)
