COULD HAVE BEEN A GREAT BOOK WITH MORE CHARACTER EXPLORATION

I am going to be generous and give this book four stars, but with reservations.
It is a good read, and says a lot about the workings of the Mexican Mafia. My problem with it is the handling of the character and the character development of Enriquez, or lack thereof. This man is a rapist, a murderer, and a gangster. Why did he suddenly go to the other side? The book really glides over this quickly. It seems that a hit was ordered on Enriquez. That they should suddenly turn on him should not be a surprise; the Mafia was his life, he knew how it works. So certainly it could not be for idealism that he defected. Instead it was to protect himself and stay alive. Now he turned and is sharing everything, going above and beyond the call of duty. That is commendable, and I am grateful to him for that. And just as he was promoted up the ranks in the Mafia, now he has reportedly become a celebrity to the LAPD, doing classes, giving speeches, etc. So this man just seems like a great opportunist, but Blatchford doesn't say that at all. To him, he is a new Christian who came from a rough background. As a Californian, I am relieved Davis denied his parole. He's creepy and Blatchford doesn't explore that.

This book takes you to the pits of hell, as you ride in the mind of a cold blooded killer.

Just finish reading this book and it easily replaced "Mafia Under-boss: Sammy the Bull Gravano's Story of Life in the Mafia" and Henry Hill's "Wiseguy" as the most intense mafia story Ive ever read. I must admit it changed my entire view of La Eme. Coming from a family that has had its share of camaradas and even a carnal (pg 6. Joe "Colorado") in this organization, Ill admit that I had a somewhat different view of La Eme. I knew they were responsible for lowering the drive-bys in the barrios and unlike the monsters south of the border, women and children are totally of limits. What I didn't realize was how plagued this organization is with power-struggles and politicking. Mob books have always interested me, and one thing Ive always noticed is that, if they were to actually follow their own rules they'd probably have less defections. From the books Ive read the story always seems to be the same, the hypocrisy of a broken organization always seems to be the main factor behind these defection. Most these guys would be willing to die for this thing that they grew up loving and believed in, its when they have that sobering moment of hypocrisy within a broken brotherhood (if you could even call it that), that they decide their life has better value. If you like mob book I highly recommend this one but be ready to go on a ride into the darkest places human evil can take you. The majority of this book is about that long, hard, dark ride but I think its a necessary ride the writer must take the reader so that the reader can appreciate the full weight of Renee's decision and redemption. This man (Renee) would take orders without blinking an eye and walk into situations fit only for a gladiator, only to come out the tired bloody victor eagerly awaiting his next assignment but its not until the end of the book, when Renee decides to leave the only life he has ever loved or known, that you see the true raw courage of a warrior.

Fast read, well written, comprehensive

This book is about Rene Esq (Boxer) starting as a teenage kid in a good Mexican family, his rise to the head of the Noestras, the creation of the Mexican mafia La Eme, and eventually his departure. It details prison life, the fear and practices of EME, both inside hand outside of prison, the growth and control of the EME, methods of communication into and out of prison. I liked this book because it is told from the mindset of a teen (through his adult EME life) and his seduction by drugs, control, protection, respect, and false security/happiness in leading his (admitted) horrible life. It is written from Rene's point of view; only part way through the last chapter, the author writes from his perspective. Anyone who knows the EME (i.e., gang cops, prison authorities) will tell you THE WRITING IS FACTUAL AND NOT EXAGGERATED. The prison gang politics & life are detailed. He also gets into his struggle in AND IN coming out of the EME; and cooperating with law enforcement and CA politics. There are 30,000 gangs with 800,000 members that have now captured 2,500 communities. (100,000 alone in Southern CA). I highly recommend this book to would be gang members, all members of law enforcement , state politicians of ALL U.S. States and members of Congress.

Another read is an excellent book "Counter/Strike" which details America's response and struggle in fighting Al Queada, but ends with the increasingly GROWING threat of Radicalization in the U.S. & gangs in the U.S..

In the past, textbooks usually stated that an etiology could be determined in less than 5% of patients presenting with newly diagnosed hypertension. We now know this is far too low a proportion (e.g., pri� mary hyperaldosteronism alone may account for hypertension in 5% of patients presenting with chronic elevations in blood pressure). Secondary Hypertension has been thoughtfully organized into chap� ters evaluating screening and diagnosis, as well as medical and/or sur� gical intervention of the well-known etiologies of secondary hypertension in adults and children. Additional coverage is given to such exogenous or lesser appreciated causes of secondary hypertension as obstructive sleep apnea and drugs. The introduction states that the aim of this book is to provide "the essential clinical, diagnostic and treatment aspects of secondary hypertension." These topics are covered by succinct and authoritative overviews that provide an agreeable balance between evidence-based medicine and skilled clinical experience. (Figure) Appropriately, the first two chapters deal with refractory and iatrogenic hypertension. Resistance to treatment, or the exclusion of obvious factors that could cause resistance, is among the most important reasons for starting diagnostic maneuvers to detect secondary forms of hypertension. Even though the two chapters overlap somewhat, they cover the most important problems, and the uncertainties in the definition of refractory hypertension simply reflect the present state of clinical practice. In my opinion, an experienced practitioner may make a diagnosis of refractory hypertension only after a patient has been treated with the right combination of three drugs for at least one month and after the possibilities of nonadherence to treatment and misleading blood-pressure measurements have been excluded. Hypertension secondary to renal disease is also clearly described. The most controversial issue is the treatment of renovascular hypertension. The few randomized trials comparing revascularization with medical therapy are too small to serve as the basis for making a meaningful choice between the two treatments. In the absence of convincing trials, the good results obtained with angioplasty in fibromuscular dysplasia favor this treatment for renovascular hypertension as well. In the case of atherosclerotic renal-artery stenosis, the decision is more difficult. Clinical practice and anecdotal observation point to a subgroup of patients who may benefit from revascularization with stenting to reduce the progression of either renal-artery stenosis or renal failure (particularly when there is stenosis in both kidneys). The procedure may also be used to lower blood pressure in patients already receiving a multidrug combination or to treat patients with coronary heart disease, cardiac insufficiency, or hypertensive encephalopathy. The clinical problems associated with disorders of the adrenal cortex receive a well-balanced review. I personally prefer magnetic resonance imaging over computed tomography for the detection of morphologic adrenal abnormalities and the use of eplerenone over spironolactone for the treatment of primary aldosteronism (to prevent the side effects of spironolactone). The ratio of plasma aldosterone to plasma renin activity, which is still not widely used in screening for primary aldosteronism, is thoroughly discussed. I particularly appreciated the chapter on nonprimary aldosteronism for its concise descriptions of all the monogenic or mendelian forms of hypertension. Patients with these forms of the disease share an abnormality in sodium transport across the renal tubuli. In the much more common "primary," or "essential," hypertension, subtle abnormalities in renal pathways for sodium transport may also be involved. In patients who have paroxysmal hypertension, palpitations, nervousness, tremor, excessive sweating, pallor, or erythema (together or in various combinations), it is not easy to distinguish between pseudopheochromocytoma due to short-term activation of the sympathetic nervous system in response to stressful stimuli (of which not all patients are aware) and the much less frequent classic pheochromocytoma. The two chapters dealing with this problem are very well written, with discussions that are neat and to the point. Careful clinical evaluation and simple algorithms are needed to avoid unnecessary tests to make the diagnosis of secondary forms of hypertension in children and adolescents. The chapter dealing with this topic is very useful, as is the one entitled "Sleep Apnea and Hypertension," which covers important aspects of the association between breathing disorders during sleep and hypertension, a connection that is not well recognized in clinical practice. Since arterial hypertension affects about 30 percent of the people in industrialized countries, this book should be in the library of primary care physicians, internists, and specialists in nephrology, cardiology, and endocrinology. I used to work at a convenience store. When I first started, there were these two guys who came into the store.The bigger guy carried a black binder, that he held snuggly under his arm. “Do you watch movies,” he asked the girl I was working with. “Sure.”

And, that was all it took. He spread the contents of his binder across the counter, and started showing us his DVD’s. “Three dollars each, two for five dollars. Five for ten dollars. You won’t get a better deal anywhere.”

Those few words were all it took to get our money, and ten or twenty dollars more from several of our customers.

So why did I tell you that story?

Like most people, I can’t say no to a great deal. Only problem is, what seems like a great deal can quickly go sour.

When I got home, and we started watching those movies, the picture was bumpy, at times the picture or sound dropped out, and every now and then, someone would get up, and walk across the screen in front of the movie.

Those movies taught me a valuable lesson.

You can buy stuff on the cheap, but that’s all you’re going to get. Cheap stuff.

The same goes for advice. There’s a lot of free advice available on the internet, but a lot of it is overpriced, even when you’re getting it for free.

When I first started selling online, I got all of my tax advice from blog posts. One of things every blogger said was, “Don’t take the home office credit. It’ll trigger an IRS audit.”

I followed that advice the first couple years I sold online. I know I didn’t want to risk an audit.

Several years later I found an accountant. When he suggested I take the home office deduction, I looked at him like he was some sort of killer clown from outer space.

I asked if he knew how dangerous his advice was? I explained how I didn’t want to trigger an audit. I asked just what kind of professional was he to suggest such a thing?

And, that’s when I discovered this one truth that will help you make more money from your online business.

I started writing about two years ago and it's been a real blast. Most of my books offer short, easy to read solutions to life's everyday problems. My bestsellers focus on ecommerce - How to sell on eBay, Amazon, Fiverr, and Etsy. Recently I published my first book of humorous essays -�Life Without the BS. It's part biographical, part political, and just a touch on the wild side.
What is the name of your latest book and what inspired it?

The most recent book in my eBay series is�eBay 2015: 5 Moves You need to make Today to Sell More Stuff on eBay.

It was inspired by all of the changes occurring on eBay over the past year. For those of you unfamiliar with selling on eBay they have two major updates every year, the Spring Seller Update and the Fall Seller Update. Each time a new seller update is released there is a mad scramble by eBay sellers trying to update their listings and stay in compliance with eBay's new rules.
The spring seller update last year was a real bear. Sellers were forced to resize all of their pictures to meet eBay's new size requirements so they would display properly when enlarged. This year's fall seller update begins with a new set of seller standards. Five star feedback is no longer the goal. Instead sellers are graded based on their defect ratio (a measurement eBay has developed to enhance buyer satisfaction).
Besides the new seller updates sellers have been faced with several other challenges this year. Many sellers have seen their sales come to a dead stop when eBay hides them in search for one reason or another.
Mobile selling has also created new opportunities and challenges for sellers. It can put you in front of more sellers as buyers hop on their iPhones and tablets to make their purchases. It can also shut your listings out so mobile buyers can't see them if your listings include HTML codes or embedded pictures, thus sellers are faced with a Catch-22 of sorts - Better looking listings, or more visibility in eBay search.

Do you have any unusual writing habits?

I hate to admit it but I write best when I'm laid back in the recliner watching TV and sipping on a Diet Coke. Just to put it out their -�Psych, Family Guy, American Dad, and the�Simpson's�set the backdrop while I'm writing. Sometimes I'll slip in an occasional episode of�Monk�or�Two and a Half Men.

What authors, or books have influenced you?

When it comes to writing advice Steve Scott is probably one of my favorite authors. His books are easy to read and packed with advice.

My favorite books have to be the historical novels of Kenneth Roberts written back in the thirties and forties -�Arundel, Northwest Passage, Boon Island, and�Lydia Bailey. They're great stories, historically accurate, and totally absorbing no matter how many times you read them.
I also have to thank my friend Mike for introducing me to Tolkien and the�Lord of the Rings�way back in my early college days. I recommend this series to everyone.
What are you working on now?

Right now I'm looking at writing more short humor, history, and essays. For next year my ecommerce focus is going to be on mastering Amazon and Kickstarter.

Do you have any advice for new authors?

Read everything you can. Write as much as you can, and don't limit yourself to just one subject or genre. More importantly, don't be afraid to fail. Not all of your books are going to be successes, and some of them can sit there for six months or a year before they finally take off and start selling. It's just the nature of the beast.

What is the best advice you have ever heard?

I hate to admit it but most of the advice I listen to I take from�Family Guy, the�Simpsons, andAmerican Dad. Thank you, Seth MacFarlane and Matt Groening.

What are you reading now?

Steve's Scott passed out a great book tip, and I've been underling passages as I read through it -Write. Publish. Repeat. by Sean Platt and Johnny B. Truant. It's loaded with solid advice for Indie authors.

I just finished reading�Zealot: The Life and Times of Jesus of Nazareth�by Reza Asian. It's a fascinating look at the life of Jesus, early Christianity, and the first century BC. Next on my list is�Killing Jesus�by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard.
What's next for you as a writer?

By the middle of the year I'm planning on switching my focus to historical writing. Subjects I see in the offing are the Spanish American War, Theodore Roosevelt, George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and more.

The best advice I can give sellers is be open to change; experiment often with new products, services, and apps; understand that big changes come to eBay twice a year- in the fall and Spring Seller Updates.
Sometimes the seller updates are easy to adjust to. Perhaps a few minor category changes, or perhaps new shipping and handling or return policies. The 2013 Seller Updates pushed many sellers to the limit. Fees changed and became tied to the eBay store levels sellers have. New picture requirements went into effect as sellers made a mad scramble to get their listings updated.
The final outtake as usual is a better buyer experience.
To thrive and grow in 2014 your eBay business needs to be fresh. You need to be nimble and able to react quickly, no matter if you're responding to eBay mandated changes, or competitive pressure from other sellers.

Sounds crazy, but that's the question I always ask myself when I'm getting ready to try something new.

You can dream all you want about the big bucks you're going to make when you start selling hundreds of those cool widgets every day. You can dream about that huge new house you're going to build with a five car garage to house your exotic sports car collection, the fancy swimming pool out back, and the home theater in the basement that seats twenty-five.

You want to know what? That's the BS the snake oil salesmen sell you on when they're pushing a get rich quick opportunity.

If that's what you think eBay is all about, get it out of your head right now. Every Power Seller I've ever known or talked with has worked his ass for every penny he made. Sixty to seventy five hours a week is not uncommon among eBay's top sellers. I don't see many of them driving fancy sports cars, or living in luxury mansions. They work a full time job, and plow most of their money back into growing their eBay business. It's an obsession.

Getting back to what I said about what's the worst that can happen. Whenever I'm considering a new product, I always ask myself what if it doesn't sell, and I'm stuck with it. What's it going to cost me? Can I recover from it if it's the world's worst idea? The thing I want to stress here is I'm not going to bet the farm on a long shot. The lotto gets up to $400 million I'm willing to drop two bucks on a shot at it. I see a fantastic product idea, I'll drop a few bucks to give it a try, but I'm not going to bet the house or kids on an untried idea. I'm going to baby step it, and that's what I'd suggest you do.

So what's all of this got to do with buying my book? Simple, it's loaded with everyday practical advice to get you started. I'm not going to tell you that you can become a power seller working two hours a week in your spare time, and I'm not going to send you to some drop ship site where you'll find the same lame stuff everyone else is selling for no profit.

I'm going to talk to you like a friend, and tell you what's worked for me. If it makes sense, you can put my advice to work for you today and every day. If after you read it you think I'm selling you a line of bullshit, you can return the book to Amazon and get your money back within seven days.

Major Accounting Tip for Ebay Sellers!!!

Had some great tips, however the main info I was looking for was not in this book. Ebayers should know, there is a threshhold for 1099-K reporting with PayPal to the IRS; 200 items & $20,000 in sales. If you exceed this, a 1099-K is generated and you MUST report your income to the IRS. My problem was I was selling a collection of cameras and accessories for a third party, and the IRS received the total amount sold, which was not my income, only part of it was. I was dinged a whopping $15,000 in tax, fees and penalties!!! I am still working with a tax accountant to clean up my mess.
