Imageless OCR of a valuable original

This text has been out of print for a long time, and the few volumes in libraries are generally in collection rooms where access is limited and copying of material restricted. So being able to get a hard copy of this material, collected by Whitney, his associates, and members of the California Geological Survey during the time that the hydraulic mines were active, is valuable. Many of the exposures they were able to examine are now gone, washed down the streams as the gold was extracted. This is also where you can read the most thorough (if utterly misguided) interpretation of the famed Calaveras Skull by Whitney.

Unfortunately (and as the description hints), this version is basically an OCR of the text. Not a single figure or photograph survives this process, which is highly unfortunate. Some pieces of the text are clearly lost or mangled. Worst of all, the *index* is an OCR of the original, but the pagination in this version is different, so the index is utterly useless (it doesn't help either than some "3"s in the original come out as "8"s here.

Google provides a serviceable scanned ebook version of the text for free, which you can download as a pdf. Unless you need something to write notes into or a copy when away from electronics, you probably want to get that and not this version.

wow.... life changing

Within the first 3 pages of this book my jaw dropped and I felt an overwhelming sense of joy because the things being described were completely accurate descriptions of me.. I have been told I am an old soul but never did I guess it was the reason behind my intense for-seeing dreams and ability to understand things about this world without even thinking about it and being correct. One night I woke up with the intense realization that everything is connected and that's when I realized I was different thank you so much for writing this book and helping to guide me through path of enlightenment

YES! This information spoke to me!

I have felt tired and more reclusive as each year passes. However, I also still feel the need to teach and give more to the world. The information in this book solidified what I have known to be true about myself for many years...I am an Old Soul. Now so clearly defined, I know I am not alone in the earthly plane.

Thank you for a succinct explanation of an Old Soul. I recommend this for those that know this to be, but desire validation for peaceful living in this soul's incarnation.

Yes! This is a great book.

If you are an old soul I fully recommend you read this book. Even if you are not sure and you wonder if you are an old soul then I feel you will enjoy and relate to this book. I have always felt the odd one out and that I have never belonged in this world. This book has explained so much. It is a short book and it didn't take long to read but it was so worth it. It also does have a questionaire at the end of the book and it was spot on. I loved doing it as it was quick to do. A really great book of old souls.

The Perfection of a Genre

The term Ruthian, in honor of Babe Ruth, is a metaphor frequently used in sports to describe an accomplishment that doesn't merely break a record but so far exceeds anything that occurred previously that it deserves this ultimate superlative. On the subject of learning how to drive a race car, Carl Lopez' book, "Going Faster" is Ruthian. A road-racing fan for many years, I had always wanted to take up amateur, SCCA racing but had difficulty developing a budget for it. Now that I can afford it, I wanted to find a way to make up for lost time in learning driving techniques. Although a lot of progressive, in-car experience is a necessity, Going Faster prepares you for learning by its incredible detail and brilliant illustrations, presented in down to earth fashion, used to describe virtually every aspect of the interaction of vehicle dynamics, race course variation, and proper driver reaction. If you have a library of other books on the subject, donate them to a thrift store and buy this book. Even if you never race, reading a book that covers a subject brilliantly is a pleasure.

Amazing, the best.

Tremendous book. The Skip Barber racing school has plenty of evidence that they're one of the best racing schools in the world, from the number of their drivers who've gone on to win world championships in various series, to a wealth of computer telemetry showing how they help drivers go faster. This book gives you all the secrets of the Skip Barber school that can be taught short of going to the school and getting in a car.

Pros:
-So many secrets. I don't even want to divulge what I've learned, because people should buy this book. Even as a lifetime enthusiast, I'm learning a lot.
-Math included, but not necessary. The book will give you actual formulas you can use if you want to plot theoretical best times around a corner.
-Wherever possible the book gives you explicit and factual data- not just promises, but hard data on what makes you faster including examples from real tracks and real cars.
-Real-world experience, not just theory. This book was assembled by, and includes commentary from, a wealth of professional drivers who graduated the Skip Barber school. Not only were they students, but many of them hold multiple championships in various professional series. These are real-world winners, giving you real-world tips.

Cons:
-Old black-and-white photos of tracks and cars. Honestly that's the best you can hope for considering the price of the book, but drivers with a more visual orientation might appreciate a glossy color version.
-Doesn't include a free pass for a day at the Skip Barber school. (Hey, a guy can dream!)

If you're a car enthusiast, or if you've ever cared about racing either as a spectator or as a (potential) driver, this book is a must. Personally, I'm going the route of computer "sim" racing to skip the real-world costs for now, and I can already point to improved lap times to show what I've learned. Not only does this book provide every ounce of racing knowledge that you can get from a general-purpose book, but it's not afraid to admit where a book has limitations. You won't find formulaic rules that don't work out in real life. In practice, the decisions you make on track come down to your comfort level and the particular car and track you're running. And ultimately, that's what this book excels at- it puts top-level knowledge in your hands, so that you can do what you want with it, whether that's driving faster or merely learning a new level of appreciation for what goes into the sport.

Great book to get your feet wet in road racing

I purchased this book as an iRacing.com driver and was starting to race in the Skip Barber F2000 series. This book goes beyond just the Skippy, but is an excellent companion to your iRacing learning experience. There are many pictures that illustrate ideas but the use of colors or shading is limited. This may have been a limitation of publications but there are other books out there that explain concepts better using different colors and patterns. Good words of wisdom from drivers and instructors spattered through the book as well. Overall I recommend, and highly recommend for iRacing.com Skip Barber drivers. It's my number 2 racing reference book. There is also a YouTube video from Skip Barber that compliments lessons from the book as well, check it out.

About the Author
In addition to being a best selling textbook author, ALAN BRINKLEY is the Allan Nevins Professor of History and former Provost at Columbia University. He is the author of Voices of Protest: Huey Long, Father Coughlin, and the Great Depression, which won the 1983 National Book Award; The End of Reform: New Deal Liberalism in Recession and War; and Liberalism and its Discontents. His most recent books are John F. Kennedy: The American Presidents Series: The 35th President, 1961-1963 and The Publisher: Henry Luce and His American Century both published recently. He was educated at Princeton and Harvard and taught previously at MIT, Harvard, and the City University Graduate School before joining the Columbia faculty In 1991. In 1998-1999, he was the Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University. He won the Joseph R. Levenson Memorial Teaching Award at Harvard in 1987 and the Great Teacher Award at Columbia in 2003. He is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a member of the board of trustees of the National Humanities Center and Oxford University Press, and chairman of the board of trustees of the Century Foundation. He has been a visiting professor at Princeton, the Ecole des Hautes Etudes en Sciences Sociales (Paris), and the University of Torino (Italy). He was the 1998-1999 Harmsworth Professor of American History at Oxford University.

very well written

I bought this for myself, not for a class, because I wanted something comprehensive. I was prepared to sacrifice readability if necessary. But this is beautifully written, even-handed (as far as I can tell), intelligent without requiring a lot of prior knowledge, and mercifully lacking in that “welcome to my suffocating, hermetically sealed moral universe” flavor that a lot of textbooks used to have. The price may not be conducive to casual reading, ditto the layout (though I got used to it pretty quickly), but if those are not deal-breakers, I heartily recommend this book.

RentU screwed me over, they sent the book in bad condition to begin with ( the cover was coming off) then after I returned the book in the same condition I recieved it it!!!, they would not accept the return and charged me full price for the book. What more is there to say STAY AWAY FROM RentU USE OTHER reputible renters. TOTALLY DISAPPOINTED WITH THEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ordered this for my upcoming semester in College. It's a rental, so I was expecting a lower quality book, but it is so nice! No crumpled pages are torn pages! I love that you don't have to spend so much for a book you may only use for a semester! Thank you for helping a struggling College student! Haha!

New tumour entities are included...Newly recognized histological variants include pilomyxoid astrocytoma. Both anaplastic medulloblastoma and medulloblastoma with extensive nodularity have gained recognition in the classification... There are some differences in classification from the third edition most notably relating to anaplastic oligoastrocytoma. The change in emphasis follows cited differences in prognosis between mixed tumours with and without necrosis. Other changes are also apparent e.g. within the atypical teratoid/rhabdoid section mention of the INI-1 locus in the genetics section in the third edition has been expanded to include immunohistochemistry in the fourth edition. The fourth edition is unique in its clear-targeted and succinct style of presentation of tumors of the CNS... it will be of universal appeal in neuro-oncology and will most certainly form the main basis for diagnosis by multidisciplinary teams managing patients with tumors of the CNS."

Hold on to your money and buy the new one, which will have several updates such as latest classification of medulloblastomas, inclusion of RELA fusion ependymoma, and so on.

Fantasy and reality collide in this whirlwind tale as "The Talisman" chronicles the journey of a young boy attempting to save his dying mother. After meeting an eccentric old man in an amusement park, Jack Sawyer becomes aware of an alien realm called the Territories. Jack must trek across America, facing the evil creatures of the Territories and of this world, to retrieve a valuable prize that can save his mother's life.
The book, while very enthralling, can crawl at points and some sequences feel as if they don't relate to the plot, which is distracting to the reader.
The two authors each have a noticeably distinct style, making it obvious when one author stops writing and the other starts. Any avid King fan can recognize his trademark style. Straub has the amazing ability to define scenes down to the finest detail.
The novel is well-devised with the effort of both authors and very pleasant to read. The vivid descriptions make the unforgettable characters come alive. Scenes become so astonishingly real that it's more like watching a movie than reading a book.
With great descriptions, interesting characters and two great authors holding the reins, "The Talisman" is a success.

Simply Brilliant

J.R.R. Tolkien once said, "Write of Earth, but not Earth," That is exactly what King has created for the reader. I originally wasn't going to write a review, but after reading many of the others i felt that i should at least give my opinion even if it isn't heeded. To begin with, Jack Sawyer begins on his quest to save his mother's life. I have read the book twice, fearing Morgan Sloat, hating Osmond, crying for Wolf, and losing control of the hinge in my jaw for Jack's final victory with the Talisman. And both times, it has been one of the best books I have ever read. Some say King focuses too much on detail, but it is that detail that makes him great, that makes every action of every character sing with joy and cringe in agony. Some have also said that the ending was "obvious" and "lavish". My response to that would be that all stories that portray good and evil and human nature caught between the two have obvious endings. Good always wins, and if you are waiting for evil to triumph in one of King's novels then maybe you had better find another author to read. The book, in fact, is a bit lengthy, but with the imagery and breadth of emotion and toil, it suits its purpose just fine for me. Grade: A+

Another of my favorite books

Together with It, The Stand and Weaveworld (Clive Barker) this has always been at the top of the list. I read this book over 15 years ago when it came out and since then I have read it at least eight more times. It is fantasy you can identfy with, the characters are so well drawn. I recommend it to "children of all ages", adults to, from 16 to 100 if they so wish, fantasy lovers and anyone who wants a really compelling read. I was thrilled to see the two authors have gotten together to do it again because I always wanted to know what happened when the young hero grew up. Enjoy.
